My vote goes to the 30.06...no particular reason other than it will drop a elk, take down deer. Shells are easy to find anyplace in the country and are usually resonably priced.I don't have a ballistics guide that allows me to compare 7mm, 253, 30.06.

My favorite is .270, have killed Blacktail, Muleys, Elk, Antalope and Moose with the same rifle! Also have the .270 in a Thompson Encore with 15"bbl Sweet shooter!

Mine is the Ruger m77 markII stainless 30.06 and is my only rifle. If I went shopping for a rifle to add to the arsenal which one? I think I would like a flatter gun for open mule deer country.

If I add another rifle it will be a 7mm mag, you can load these things and get some awsome shooting out of em!

280 for me, have killed elk, deer and bear with one. If I went looking for a new gun I think it would be a 300 mag mainly because I target open country muleys and elk. The bullistics are pretty impressive At long range, Although I have never shot at anything over 200 yds.

I use only my .270 It shoots flat and still has power. I like to shoot a 140 grain bullet for deer and 150 for bear and elk.

all my rifles are the best rifles! I guess all rifles have a purpose, and many can be be "the best" for different things. But if i had to pick one for all my big game hunting, it would be my 30.06. I will use my 300 for elk, and a muzzleloader for deer this year, but if i had to have one to do it all, it would be the old 06. The ballisitc difference between an 06, 7 mag, or 300mag is small enough that it shouldnt make much difference for anyone shooting at reasonable distance. Past 300 yards they all drop like a rock anyway.[ 09-03-2001: Message edited by: SeanD ]

With the introduction of the magnums and the availability of premium loads over the counter one of the magnums would probably be the best choice. I can't see any reason to purchase a 30 06 with these available today. It has the same size lead as a 300 but with alot less velocity and energy. If you were to only have one rifle I would think a 300 mag would be the one. You can go up to 200 grains or down to 165 with this and hunt a good varity of game and with the right choice can shoot really flat. I would not reccommend using 150 grain bullets in a 300 they are too light and do not hold up well if you hit bone. Although, my remington 700 bdl 270 win is a tack driver and before I had a second gun (300 win mag) put down a few elk. But I have been very impressed with the performance of the 300 mag. For a one gun owner the advatages of the 30.06 would be availibility of ammo, less recoil, and a barrel of reasonable length. I love my 300 mag, but the 26 inch barrel is a real pain. Two inches makes a huge difference in the brush! And i think a lot of people buy bigger guns without understanding that shooting them lot can develop a flinch. I shoot my smaller guns a lot, my 300 very little. It is worth it to me to have the advatages of the increased energy from the 300, but i have other rifles to use in other situations. For a guy with one gun, especially if he hunts the coast range blacktails and elk, a 30.06 would be the one i would recommend. Its just a great do everything well rifle. some other rifles may do certain things slighlty better, but the 30.06 can do almost everything well.

Hey Sean, you can have it both ways! I shoot a Ruger No. 1-B 7 mag single shot. With a 26" barrel its still shorter than a long action bolt gun with a 24" tube. Rugers have always been sweet shooters for me, and this one is especially nice with PMC Eldorado ammo loaded with 160 grain Barnes "X" bullets. Greg

Greg, very true those ruger no. 1's are very nice! Ive always wanted one, the only problem is they are so expensive. You can buy a bolt for a lot cheaper. Been thinking about a New england firearms 280 rem with the 26 inch barrel, then have it ackley improved. that would be sweet. then you could get an extra .223 barrel for varmints.....

Sorry Sean, I would have to differ with you on this one, two inches does not make that big of a difference in the brush, I have brush hunted my whole life down in Pacific County and started with a 270 and now have the 300 and have not found it (extra length) to be a determint at all.If the kick of a 300 is too much for you then you can get one with the BOSS system on it(which drops the kick to the equivialent of a 270) or drop down to 165 grain bullet (you can get a barns x but would have to handload). the BOSS also increases the accuracy of the gun. If you want a short barrelled brush gun you should be looking at the 308win in a munslinger (sp?) model. very versitile load and this style of gun comes with a much shorter barrell. For me the two inches makes a diference. I have plugged the barrel twice on my 300 with now while stepping over a log. Never done that on a 24 inch barrel. Just depends on what you are used to. I have an 06 with a 19 inch barrel. thats a brush gun! With handloads i still get 2850 fps with 150's. With a BOSS system on a 26 incher, you would be around 28 inches! To me that would be like trying to carry a fishing rod through the brush! BOSS? Ouch my ears hurt! Naw i dont mind the kick, i just dont sit down and shoot a box through it. I have my 06 or even .22 for that. I was just saying that for a new guy, a 300 might be a bit much to learn to shoot with. I used to load 165's but now im just sold on 180 partitions for everything in the 300. I do agree about the .308, a very good elk/deer rifle.

Sean,I was thinking of oneof those NEF singles in .243 for my daughter. I'm just not sure the frame on those will hold up to very much shooting. Another option (a little pricier) for a switch barrel gun is a TC Encore, or better yet one of the TCR break open rifles that Thompson Center used to make. Now THOSE were (are) some compact rifles. Greg PS...I can't afford NEW Ruger No, 1's, either! I traded for mine several years ago.

Everything i have heard about the NEF is that they are very strong and hold up well. instead of the falling block action, they have the break action. I havent owned a rifle of theirs, but i have killed a lot of pheasants and rabbits with their shotgun when i was a kid. Might be the savage of single shots. Kind of like the ugly girlfriend. serves you well, but dont let your frinds see you with her.

Sean,When the boss is put on a rifle the barrell is two inches shorter and then the boss is added to get to the 26 inches. Also, I was not aware of this being in regards to a new hunter I was thinking the best all around gun. The ballestics on a 300 are far superior to a 30 06 in short and long distance shooting. I agree with the 180 grain bullets although I would reccommend the barnes X if you gun shoots them accurate. Unbelievable Performance when you hit a big animal!! As far as one gun for a new guy I would say a 270 or a 308.

Marty, I have though hard about this since the original post, and I have come to a conclusion, there is no "Best Rifle" out there, it is what you feel most comfortable with, I would sacrafice pure knockdown power any day for a rifle I know I can hit very accurately with every shot! I shoot all my big game with a .270 Remington model 700SS which I know for a fact has enough power for any big game we have in the Northwest, I have taken Elk, Deer, Antilope and Moose with it. The main reason I use it though is I know when I put the cross hairs on an animal it is dead! I think it all comes down to being confident in what you decide it the Best Rifle!Just more of my giberish! John

Lots of interesting insight....you guys know your guns. This can easily turn into the ford/chevy....toyota arguments. John I have to agree If you can put it where it is suppose to go it is a good rifle. Knowing your distance to the target isn't quite as critical with a rifle as it is with a bow.(Under 200 yards). Personally I don't feel comfortable over 200 yds so a good group is more important than a long range hit. Watched a hunting show where they saw a elk at 400+yards and started firing. Took several shots to finally drop it...I couldn't believe they were taking the shot in the first place. Especially the way they were talking about their shooting ability. They also shot at a bull that showed up a long ways away that got away...or was hit and they didn't know it. Relying on on blood trail from a elk is not a reliable way to find your kill....if you get a bad shot you will get no blood!! Then mix in the elements...rain ...no blood for sure.

Greg, I bought a NEF .243 youth superlite with a 16 inch barrel and synthetic stocks for Lildrifter 3 years ago. I put a 4 power scope on it and it is just perfect. He shot his whitetail last year at almost 200 yards. This year it is going down to my 10 year old to use. And if you look at the new Mossberg SSI (I think) you will find a really good looking single shot, similar to a Ruger but at almost half the price. The nice thing on that NEF single shot is the barrel and stock options.

Great topic Guys I own 2 hunting rifles for the last 22 years I've use a Remington 760 Pump Carbine 30-06 a great westside gun, heck I've killed Elk out over 250 yards with it,My favorite rifle to shoot is my Remington 700 mountain Rifle in a 280, killed 4 elk with it and even more Mulies and a few Whitetails. For the Average dude I'd say the 30-06 ..less kick and the animal won't know the difference between it and a 300 mag. just because a gun will kill at 400 yards doesn't mean you can hit it...easier said than done....Os
