Deer behavior question? new
      #344218 - 08/25/08 07:55 AM

I've had terrible problems with deer this year eating everything in my garden. I've tried all sorts of controls. My last resort will be to put up an ugly electric fence. I'm trying to avoid that.

This year, we've had more bucks visiting than normal. They're in velvet still, and they just won't go away. (in fact, Caveman hit one with his little car 3 weeks ago. $2000 in repairs.)

I've come to the conclusion that they are seeking out my trees, shrubs and flowers because the soil here on the island is deficient in most minerals. I try to garden organically, so I use organic materials including minerals to amend said soil. I think this may actually be attracting the deer.

So, are there mineral blocks available that I could place away from my garden area that will keep these guys from eating me out of house and garden? Does anyone think this might work?

Yes mineral blocks do attract deer and elk. I'd place them fairly far from your shrubbery to draw the deer away.

Thanks Mojo. I'm getting some blocks!

Sept. 1st will be the day the deer disappear. Happens every year. Same with the coyotes. Here one day and gone the next.

Paintball guns work well and can be fun at the same time. I'm not saying you should actually shoot them with them, because it could be considered harassing wildlife.

PS: They work a lot better after they've been frozen

We have a few salt blocks around the property for the deer, mostly to keep them away from the apple trees. We'll also be planting a food plot just for the deer late winter or early spring.

We'll probably end up naming some deer "Pinky" once we get our yard in, and the boys will realize their dreams of paintball gun ownership. "Shoot to miss, boys!"

We put up an 8 foot tall fence around the apple trees and that seemed to work pretty good, except that a fawn managed his way in there, so all the apples up to 3 feet were gone. It was pretty funny to watch. Then again, we don't eat those apples, yet.

There is a product on the market called "Deer Scram" or somthing to that effect. Although not as effective as a 7MM Rem with a 150 grain ballistic tip, it works rather well. Some hardware stores carry it, easiest to find online.

Somebody at work mentioned this.

Scare Crow

Shoots water. Maybe you could hook it up to a paintball gun!

I have one of those sprinklers. It worked for a few months. Now, the deer just laugh at it. They also laugh at my motion sensor alarms and LED lights. The sprays haven't worked either.

Once hunting season starts, they'll be long gone and I won't see them again until spring, when all my stuff starts growing.

The deer are pretty tame on the Island. I have seen people feeding them carrots by hand near the North end past Jerrols Cove. Once they become too used to people, the best deterrent is lead or sharpened steel.

There's a product called Plantskydd that you can spray on plants. It's a mixture of animal blood and bone. It was the only thing that my mom could keep the deer off her roses.

Yeah Marsh, but if you got one of those in .223, you would have deer, and undesirables, stacked up like cord wood.

If you have the room, lay chicken wire on the ground. The deer's don't walk on it because the wire goes between their hooves. No fences, but a pain to weed eat across.

Well if they are still there on the 1st, report back with your address and I can take care of one of them. If there is still a problem after that, i'll bring friends. Us boilermakers are all hungry out here on the Peninsula and it sounds like your property is loaded with food!

1. Have bow will travel
2. Sounds silly, but give Caveman a few beers every night and have him put the recycled Bud, aka Coors/keystone light, around the flower beds/garden. It keeps the deer off of the wife's roses

The paint ball thing is awesome. And I am with these guys too. Have bow will travel. Headed out east on the 8th. Maybe I will stop by on the way out and whack a deer or so. You guys can keep everything except the back strap.

Also consider a visit by Lydia and I. You 2 can discuss planting deer proof plants....yes they do exist.
