I finally stopped by to check out the river at the Brown Bear Hole aka Rogers Street. SH.Net site owner was there with a befuddled look on his face plus Andrew who was teasing the fish. After taking care of getting my season river pass for Nicks property I went back down to check out the action. Some nice pigs coming in! Marty just couldn't hook up. Finally started coaching him on how to properly set up his rigging and suggested that he toss his gear over the top of the submerged log behind which the silvers were all podded up. He kept hooking up on that log anyway when trying not to so why not go big or go home? First attempt resulted in a nice 5 pounder that tore him up! I couldn't for the life of me figure out why until I looked at his reel and saw that he was using one of those dangfangled old direct drives he cherishes for some odd reason. You are not going to land many silvers of any size on that river thumbing the dang things.

Pig silver run is on!

Sounds like a good time. I've never been there but it reminds me of the snag patches I get into on the Halis.

Rain didn't effect it that much but it's a whole lot better than we've had for the past 3 years. Fish are blasting up in groups. I wouldn't even worry about the tides Joe. I'm not as I have to work this weekend but I'll be there in the afternoons/evenings! A lot of Honyachs fishing the Brown Bear and quite a few buying access permits.....so hike up river a bit and find a sweet spot.

lol! It happens to all of us, don't even tell me you have never had a 4-8lb steelhead or silver leave your arms tired, you confused, and with a big smile on your face! I can think of one 9lb steelhead, one 12lb chinook (on adequate gear) that put me through a 10-15 minute battle where I was on the losing end until the very end! And one 5lb steelhead that l got laughed at by Lennox when I said it was one of the toughest fighting steelhead I have ever hooked. That lil' bigger was! lol

Right you are NickV! Some of those 1-salt and smaller 2-salt steelies -- esp. the hens -- would be unlandable if they were any bigger. I recall catching a 13-jump 9lb Skeena hen last fall. That fish was fed on jumping beans (and regretably, hooked through the eye).

However, there's a difference between hooking a surprisingly tough smaller sized specimen and hooking an ordinary critter and just making a bollocks of the fight. Drag too loose (or no drag at all), bad rod work, not knowing where the logs/ boulders are and letting a fish stitch you up. That sort of stuff happens when you're not paying a lot of attention, hook up and then first 5 seconds are a bit of clusterfluff. That's what's worth paying cash money to witness, esp. when it's a gun angler like Marty on the receiving end of a whuppin'.
