That's pretty much the case this time of the year. River water will be in the low 50's, but the 'air temperature' can be in the 90's plus. Get 'over heated?' Just sit down and say: "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh."
I assume when Greg says 'Finley' he means 'Finley Bend' aka Matson Park. One of my favorite places to fish below Grants Pass.
EDIT: Just looked at the photo's again and Greg/Dad appear to be fishing the rock ledge across from Matson Park. The park side (upper end) is where the 'fly water's' located. Great place to swing a fly with a heavy sink tip and weighted fly. Half the 'swing' is going into the deep pool you see in the photos.
Above this, water flow dependent, either a light sink tip/weighted fly or with water flow at 2K and down, a full floater and a looooong leader.
