cleaning recommendations...................... new
      #347479 - 09/22/08 06:28 AM

So i got this old CVA........Has not been fired in twenty years or so. Bore checks out fine but I'm wondering if ther is something I should do (cleaning etc) prior to lighting this thing off?

I'll be shooting the ol' patch and ball propelled by Hodgdon triple seven which is supposedly a bit friendlier than the black powder I used to use, but I'm interested to hear how you guys clean you're bores..........

HOT HOT HOT HOT water. like hot enough that you can hardly grab the barrel. Do this in the bathtub only when your old lady is not around, it makes a hell of a mess and smells like you made a hell of a mess.

I also add some Ivory soap to the mix. Seems to break up the gunk a bit better. Hot is good.

Make sure it is really unloaded.

I start out with the proper bore brush, and hot soapy water. Scrub, rinse, dry. Clean out the nipple, place a patch on the jag and run to the breach. While the patch and the jag are at the breech end, fire off 3-5 caps to dry it out. Clean the nipple again. Season the bore with T/C bore butter, and store.

Hey, guys, before you leave the woods, after firing the gun, take a swab with rubbing alcohol and run it down the bore before leaving. It gets 95+% of the crud out of the bore. Put the filthy swab in a plastic bag, and dispose of it properly. That way, most (if not all) of the smell and gunk is gone when you do get home and give it the final cleaning (the way Dogfish said).

I guess I assumed the ivory soap would be involved from the get go. Run a pipe cleaner through the nipple. I usually put a patch on the muzzle when I torch a cap off, if the cap get's blown off, my nipple is clear. You can also point it at the dirt and if any dust fly's up then you should be clear.

Watch out for the TC Bore butter!!! In my opinion don't use it unless you are storing it and if you do make sure your nipple is clear of it. That stuff has screwed me more times than I care to mention. Seems like no matter what it ends up in the nipple blocking the spark.

As long as you use it sparingly, you are fine. Thin light film is good, not like you are spreading peanut butter. Never had a misfire in 15 years of hunting ML due to bore butter.

One final hint, if you are using a sidelock (not an inline but a traditional Hawken style gun), after you have put in your charge and seated your bullet you should pull the nipple and drop in a few grains of 777 or pyrodex, then screw the nipple back in. Do not do this with black powder, as it may ignite when crushed. No hangfires after I started doing this.

All I use is sidelock guns. Don't need those "newfangled" guns.

I never had a misfire using standard No. 10 primers. I guess that is because I always dry and check the nipple with a small piece of fine-diameter wire BEFORE putting the primer on!

And yeah, using Bore Butter SPARINGLY works very well!!

I bought my first side lock when I was 10, don't ask me why, I worked all summer for it, my mother worried that I would be another John Dillinger or the likes. From the ages of 10 to 18 the number of hangfires and non fires were astronimical from that stuff. In fact it hungfire the first time I ever shot it and kicked the hell out of me! No, no one in my family owned a muzzledloader before me, so I was the guinea pig.

Granted the number of misfires from the years of 18 to 33 have greatly reduced, they still will happen if your not careful. Rule of thumb for me and muzzleloaders is if there is even the slightest chance, it will go wrong. You need to put yourself in about 5 "sure thing" situations a season, and then you might kill something.

That can happen ONLY if you don't clean the "flashhole" (the channel between the nipple and the barrel proper)very well with a pipecleaner and solvent, followed up with a little rubbing alcohol to dry it up completely. This must be done every time you clean the rifle.

Take care of it, and it will take care of you!
