Hey guys, it's almost time...bear season opens in two weeks, and then archery elk and deer, done any scouting yet? I'm thinking of sacrificing a weekend of steelheading to head to the eastside for black bear, anyone know of some good places to start looking? Preferably somewhere that hasn't been featured in the fish and game magazines, I don't like hunting in a crowd! Greg

We go over to Republic/Curlew area every year during deer season and we have been told that there is a large population of bears there with quite a few being cinnamon colored. The fishing can also be quite good with most of the fishing being done at night so you can hunt in the day and fish at night. We just made reservations for the 29th of July thru Aug. 3- 4. We don't plan on doing any bear hunting this trip but you could email Al and Sharon at bbresort@televar.com and they can give you some info. Very helpful people. You would also get a chance to see hundreds of deer a day.

Thanks, Lazy! I'll do that. What kind of deer, whitetails? I've killed a bunch of whitetails back east, and would really like to add a nice mulie to my bag while I'm stationed out here. Greg

The Republic area has a nice mix of Muleys and Whitetail! That is one reason I enjoy hunting over there. Last year my partner had a chance to shoot a huge sow Black Bear and did not pull the trigger cause he thought 200 yards was to far with his 7mm! He was borrowing it from his uncle. All he has ever shot before was a .30.30 with open sights.

Wow, he obviously underestimated how potent that 7 Mag is! I've killed whitetails at nearly 200 yards with my TC Contender handgun in 7mm TCU, and it's a pussycat compared to a maggie. I sure wouldn't have a problem dropping the hammer on a bear with my 7 Mag. But if you're used to open sights and hunting in the brush, open country will fool ya. Guess if he wasn't comfortable with the shot he did the right thing. Greg
