You a hunter or a fisherman? new
      #348050 - 09/25/08 08:03 PM

This summer I was reading a John Geirach book (he's pretty good if you haven't read any of his work, though I do like his older stuff better). Anyway, he was talking about hunting, and that he had come to the realization that he was a fisherman who hunted. Basically, that's the way he thinks of himself - as a fisherman. But he also likes to hunt.

Most years I would have to put myself in the same boat - a fisherman who also hunts. This year, however, I've probably hunted more days than I've fished. That's probably saying something considering fishing season is always open. I guess I'm a hunter who also fishes.

So how about you? You a fisherman who hunts, or a hunter who also fishes?

I guess I'm BOTH! I guess I am just a true woodsman that likes meat! I like wild places! When I was very young, I was a fisher and did a little hunting. As I got older, I was a hunter, and also fished. Now that I am old, I fish as much as I hunt... and we are blessed with LONG seasons on both!

Leaving on a camping/muzzleloader deer hunt in two weeks in the "home area" in the Adirondacks, after some bird hunting before to "get in shape", and I am also looking forward to the big lake-run brown trout& steelhead fly fishing ACTION when the big runs begin in late October!

AAaaah! Retirement is tough - decisions, decisions.....
(That's not the ONLY choices, though - as an "active" widower, there are OTHER decisions regarding all the lonely women, too....)

I think there is a large amount of "hunting" that goes into a fishing trip.

I consider myself a woodsman, or outdoorsman. Not always hunting or fishing when exploring the outdoors.

I'm just a guy who likes to cook and eat fresh dead stuff.

I like adventures, but mostly I like just being around my local area, knowing how the game and fish act, and being "out there". Hanging out with family and friends, around water and woods, is tradition that runs deep for me. When I know the fishing will be good, I fish. When I know the hunting will be good, I hunt. When I know both will be mediocre I do both, or pick one based on my mood, or amount of time I have to spend.

I'm a fisherman who hunts. I try to get my 1 deer a year so that I have some good stuff to cook up on the boat while fishing. Love the smell of summer sausage being warmed on the casr iron over Mr. Heater. I've hooked fish while doing it too which is a real hoot.

Used to be both. Over the years I came to realize that as far as the hunt was concerned, I was less interested in the kill and gaind my enjoyment from getting out in beautiful country and observing wildlife, etc. On my last elk hunt several years ago [after passing on an opportunity to fill my cow tag the first day] I came to the realization that there was far too little time to fish [my main interest] and I gave up the hunt. Never regretted the decision.

I would say that I am a hunter that also likes to fish, this probably stems from preferring steak over fish. Now if I lived on the coast that might be different since I love crab and ling cod and halibit

I love to hunt the prairie of Eastern Montana, I haven't drawn a deer tag for two years. Fraid you'd have to lock me up in the looney bin if I couldn't fish for two years.
Fisherman here, that loves to hear the thump of a bullet and the smell of sage.

Every time I go east I get some sage branches, put them in a "medicine pouch" and keep them handy for when I get stressed. When that happens, I roll the pouch in my hands, take a big whiff, and the thought of my high desert hunts takes the stress away.

Glad someone else appreciates that smell.

Big Sage country is where I live, and nothing smell better than the desert after a fall rain. Well maybe Cedars after a rain...

Funny how "aroma therapy" really works. Not that canned stuff though, I'm talking the real deal.

BTW, I'm probably a fisherman that hunts. More so now that my back is smoked.

Wow I didn't realize how much I missed sage until I read this. I spent many hours in Nevada and miss the sage. Time for a road trip.

Anyone wants to ship me a pkg of fresh sage it would be greatly appreciated. Use to keep some hanging in the house and in the truck for the same effect Andy describes....great stress reducer!

I practice my survival skills and don't differentiate between hunting and fishing. Never have been interested in the pursuit of animals just for the catch and release experience.

I guess I would have to call myself a hunting fisherman. I fished on the way out to hunting this year and I fished while in bewtween morning and evening hunts. So I think that should cover it. By the way... thanks for the trip on the Quil Gooose.

I introduced the boys to the smell of sage this year on our grouse hunt. It made an impression, but they are not hooked just yet. Hunter is definitely a hunter, while I'm not certain what Ryan is just yet.

I'm taking the week of the 6th off to do some work on the shop, but I may head east for deer for a day (purely a mental health day). If I do, I'll pick up a few branches of sage for you.

This year was the first year since I was fourteen that I didn't have a problem with the sage buggin my allergies. So I actually got to enjoy it. But then again. I was at altitude most of the time in the Deadwood where there wasn't much of that stuff. I do kno wexactly what you are talking about with the fall rain though. Only in the desert do you get that smell.

Used ot be a Fiserman who hunted. Now if I had to choose it would be hunting, Can't wait for season to start and once it is over I am planning next years hunts. Almost depressed that we didn't go to Montana this year and that I have already Bow hunted Elk here in WA. Will be back out for late season though and up for late buck in 550 with my Rifle.
