The disadvantage of steel shot compared to lead is that it just doesn't carry or travel nearly as far without losing momentum and knock-down power. This is because iron has a density of 7.87 which is only about 70% that of lead which has a density of 11.36.

The higher the density the more carrying power a metal shot will have. Here are the densities of some common metals:

Iron - 7.87
Copper - 8.96
Bismuth - 9.8
Silver - 10.49
Lead - 11.36
Tungsten - 19.3
Gold - 19.32

Tungsten should be better than lead when it comes to hitting ducks and geese at long range.

If the birds you are shooting at are in range, then it dosn't really matter that much. If there not in range then you shouldn't be shooting at them in the first place.Nothing ruins a good hunt faster than than some one "sky busting". If the birds arn't working your spread then you should just wait for the next bunch.
