2008 Muzzleloader season 4x4 and more!
      #349889 - 10/09/08 01:59 PM

Wow, what a year.... First the dandy bull, then end the season with a decent 4x4...

Here's how it all went down... We were making a push through this large flat when I spotted the buck ahead of me, he was bedded down and I rangefinded him at 112 yards. All I could see as he was looking at me was his horns, his face and about 5" of his neck... So I took a lean on the closest tree to me zero'd on his neck and touched it off. It was the first time I've ever had a slight delayed fire with my Bighorn. But as the smoke cleared I didn't see a deer so I reloaded real quick and ran to where he was at only to find that I had shot his horn off. The bullet entered right at the base of the horn and the horn ended up about 15 feet away. As I stood there looking at him I noticed by his breathing he wasn't dead so I finished him off with a neck shot.... He's my personal largest blacktail at 178 pounds meat and bones! When you put his horn back on he measures 18 1/4 inch inside to inside....

Overall we managed to fill 4 tags and lost 1 buck that one of the guys had shot opening day. We searched high and low for this buck which he swore was a dandy. Three days later we went back and made the same hunt only to find some ravens working an area and managed to find the buck he had shot, but it was completely consumed already. What a sick feeling....

Here's what was left... Talk about some all time highs and lows in the same trip....

One animal is a good year for most. But I believe you may have just ruined yourself with too much success.

It's all good with the horns, I contacted my taxidermist (Rick Leach) and he said it wouldn't be a problem to fix the horns.... So I'm taking them into him Monday...
