I just ordered a bunch of those phish jigs which are a cross breed to the darts/buzz bombs. They were under 3 bucks each.Swains in Port Angeles has a imitation dart for a couple bucks without hooks.

fishmasterdan I picked up a load of darts at the Sportman's Show for $3 a pop (no hook). Shoot me some mail. I'll let some go for $3.50 if you pay for shipping or can drive south some.

www.swains.com Marty, I know a guy out in Sequim that builds jigs. Close to the Point Wilson Dart in design. He sells wholesale. If you would be interested let me know and I can give you his name.

Lazy That would be great. Phish jigs are made in Sequim also. Not sure what kind of a account we need but it would probably be worth it if there is enough interest. Would be nice to have a steelhead jig head maker that sold wholesale. I know there is a local guy around somewhere that could do it, just don't know his name.

Has anyone heard of the lures that are being made in Chehalis? My understanding from the article that I read was that they are some hot lure like a dart. But they have some special glitter That realy attracks the fish in dark water.

In my opinion, the very best jig for Salmon in the salt is the Kandlefish jig by Blue Fox, it has a larger profile than a dart of the same weight, has the best and slowest flutter fall I have ever seen, and is all I use for Kings anymore, no more fooling around with fast sinking, dead looking darts. I only managed only a dozen or so trips to the piers this past summer, landing 10 Kings, three over 20lbs. they are cheaper by far than a dart, and come in some great colors. the guy from Chehalis is selling the grim reefer jigs, very similar to a dart, and dont forget past thirty feet, there isnt too much light to reflect anything, profile is the key.

Dan Eds In lynnwood always has a rack every year of darts with no hooks from 1-2.50 depending on size scrape marks etc., if ya want some I will go look, its been a while since i have gone but is 3 blocks from the house, let me know the color and weight you are lookin 4. Fuzzy yes at depths the profile is true, but at structure and reef and depth ,as edmonds for example darts are the preferable choice, if ya want flutter go with buzz bombs hard too beat! For kings I fish darts for both I fish buzz bombs, silvers prefer buzz bombs, faster more fluttery.I don,t like darts for the most part unless the bottom is sandy and deep.# #2.5 and #3 buzz bombs white, green and white, and army for the rare occasions.Marty probably has a mold for something like these darts, buzzbombs, painted banan lead etc.

Wayne, I have fished Edmonds for about 15 years, and other Seattle areas piers, let me ask you this, how many kings have YOU caught? mine number in the hundreds, and I have won the pier king derby back to back years. buzz bombs are for crackers, and catch too many shakers, darts fall too fast making them a snag magnet, since 99% of all the kings are caught within three feet of the bottom, except for the early morning, when I find them in the top twenty. lets fish together at Edmonds this year Wayne, you bring your buzz bombs, and darts. we'll keep track of Kings from June 15th till' August 15th. and compare notes.

Fuzzybut - What colors of the Kandlefish do you recommend? Are they widely available? I haven't looked at jigs in a while, I usually troll but these sound interesting, do you stick with the stock hooks? Use any scent? Thanks in advance!

Quillback, they are fairly available, Outdoor Emporium, & Sportco is where I get mine, I recommend the 2 oz. model, they make several different colors, but I only use two, the pearl white is my #1 choice, followed by the white/green back. Hooks: remove all the stock hooks on whatever jigs you use, they are all junk, especialy the ones on the point wilson darts, discard them as soon as you get them. replace them with #2 Gamakatsu EWG, or or Mustad triple grip (bronze) even the round bend Gami's are good. as are the VMC conecut. the next thing is, never ever tie directly to the jig's line tie eye, this kills the action, buy some stainless split rings to put on the front line tie, and tie your line to this. I use a 18" leader from the jig(25lb.) to a quiality black barrel swivel (sampo is my fav.) and then tie your mainline to this, Kings have teeth, and will cut your lighter mainline in heartbeat. I use either 10 or 12 pound UG, and a 9' lamiglass rod rated for 10-25lb. and my Shimano curado, other quality level wind. Scent: smelly jelly sticky liquid, either herring, or anchovy.
one thing that is just as important, bring your own net, too many guys come down to the pier and fish, and when they hook-up, immediately they look around for someone who has a net. it doesnt do any good to have all the right stuff to hook a fish up, but no way to get it thirty feet up to the pier. I usualy lock mine up to the back rail, too many times people mistake my net for the "pier" net. dont get me wrong if someone asks politely, I might take the time to net, but dont forget I am there to fish too. nets are easy to make I made mine over 10 years ago, still going strong, and it has had one hell of alot of Kings in it. quill... I hope this helps put some fish on the deck for you. any other questions I would be happy to answer.

Fuzzy - Thanks for the reply, I'll be fishing out out of my boat, so I don't need the 30' net, but it's fuuny how people somemes think your is the "dock" net. Thanks especially for the tip about the split ring, I've fished with darts and always tied up directly to the jig, I don't use jigs too often, one place I do use em is in front of the Chambers creek hatchery in August, I think your tips will help - good luck with the Kings this year!

I fish jigs for salmon a lot from boats and rely very heavily on my homemade dart style jigs. Mine are even heavier and quicker diving than a standard dart, hence have even less "action" but catch fish like there is no tomorrow. I have found the more time the jig spends in front of the fish's face the more fish you catch and they don't care about "action" much. Big chinook and halibut are opportunists. Stick a big bait in front of them and they attack it. If it isn't moving much...all the better, easier to kill. By far the biggest mistake I witness is people over working their jigs. I, too, have had great luck with derbies, though I've never dock fished. And have won more than my share of derbies and charter boat "pots" for big fish. I make an 8 3/4 ounce jig with about the same profile as a 6 oz dart that can really work well on the big kings down deep or in fast currents and on charterboats. It took salmon to 30 pounds last year and is absolutely deadly on halibut / rockfish, so you can fish multispecies. My newest jig just got reworked and is now weighing in at 15 ounces. It is a glow in the dark 9 inch herring style, which I am just dying to test out. My 2 1/2 ouncers really see very little action, except tossing to schools(smaller salmon/diving birds)...I made some very fast action jigs that were like a flatter dart style with a buzz bomb type center that had a lot of flutter but didn't get down well. Not even sure where those molds are any more..not my style, though they may have been great for cast/retrieve in waters 30 feet deep or so...Now I am chomping to see what the big 15 ouncer dredges up...

Fuzzy have you tried the phish jigs? They have a wide thin profile that will fall a lot slower than the buzz bombs and still give the spin action. Possible to puthem on a spinner shaft if you want a closer resemblence to the darts. Anyway just wondering

Hey fuzzy Dang okay your the king dock fisher KING, I have been fishing edmonds since I was a kid and the biggest producers are buzz bombs(me and the other crackers toss) and darts, I prefer buzz bombs because of the snags, if you can find a spot at the far end of the pier, then, the heavier the better, as the bottom is very sandy, I like too toss to the man made reef, where alot of fish are caught. You may be right I have caught my share of shakers, next time your at edmonds, tell me how many fish ya see caught off of darts, and buzz bombs, I would bet 90% with a few exceptions of the candlefish tossers, but I am always open to new things, so I will take ya up on the dock party. Ya can show me up, and I can see how..Anyways, I know you,re on top of things fuzzy, so no harm intended.me probably caught 20 or so fish off the pier none over twenty, but I mostly fish the silvers. You are right on the drop net, most that use it return it full of blood and not even wound up, rope trails too the other end of the dock.Anyways I water ski all summer, so I have too spread time according too weather. But we will hook up and do that, I will buy us brunch!at arnies!! (anyways dan check with eds in lynnwood) Woodsy Wayne [ 03-18-2002, 11:06 PM: Message edited by: wayne ]

Easy there Waynster, no harm intended, I too started out with the darts, and even have caught a few on buzz bombs, but being the fisherman that I am I wasn't satisfied, and with the Kandlefish, my catch rates just dramaticaly improved, both in frequency, and bigger fish, Roeboat was right, the longer you can make your lure hang in front of its face the better, hence the slow flutter of the K-fish. I also agree with Roeboat that people waaaaay over work the jigs, when you see me jig, its almost like a bass fisherman fishing a plastic worm, very slow, and deliberate. and always keep in mind that 100% of the strikes are when the lure is falling. the herky jerky, might work for silvers, but not kings. and when its windy, or the tide is running b-bombs are useless. Marty, I have been curious about those phish jigs, as long as they get on a horizontal plane quickly after you drop the rod tip and stay there, and not tail, or nose dive, I am sure they would work, do they make a 2 oz. model? I would have to put them on a shaft, I feel sliding jigs dont work nearly as good as a solid one.
Roe: a 15 ounce jig? oh man! you go boy!! let me know how you do, see, fish dont know weight, only profile, and for some species the bigger the better, you got a stand up tuna rod for that bad boy?

Fuzzy I will look around to see where I put some of the ones I have. They are made with a flexible lead so you can shape them unlike the buzz bomb. I sold a bunch of them to hohwaiian a while back. (think it was him) hmm maybe that was the darts. Somebody got a bunch of them. You could tie them on a short leader if you wanted to do the bend tricks. I use to do a lot of surf jigging when I was younger on the local coast guard base. I sucked but it was my first encounter with the big boys. Then came steelhead I can order more up if we want to do a group thing. It is that time of year again

Roeboat I have been trying to figure out a way to make a jig mold.Have you suceeded at making one?I make most of the stuff I fish with but these have slipped by me.I like to use the bake on powder glow in dark style for any cheap jigs I buy. Making the molds...have fun! It takes time...unless you have a machine shop which I don't have. The good news is you can get by with just a carbide cutter and an electric drill. Just cut the design into the aluminum, rough out with a metal blade on a skilsaw for big molds, do some test pours and adjust as needed...I just cut the molds out of alumimum sheet stock ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 thick. For my 9 ouncer I just froze a herring and cut the mold til the herring fit perfect. Weight of mold determined by size of herring...Then cut in the gillplates, eyes, scales, etc. with a dremel. Best color for salmon is the army tank followed by white.
