Anybody go true cod fishing? We use to have a good fishery in the straights years ago before they were drag netted. I haven't fished them in a long time and wondering if they recovered yet.

We used to catch lots and lots of the true cod in puget sound in the sixties but it's been years now since I've even seen one. I thought they were extinct around here. Can you keep them in the straights?

Plunk I believe so but I will have to double check my regs. Talked to a diver tonight and he told me there are still a bunch swimming around. I am going to fish for them if legal to do so.

buxndux --- You're right on! I checked the regs also and found the following:

Areas 1 thru 4; - Open year round; - No Limit

Areas 5 thru 7; - Open year round; - Limit 2/day

Areas 8 thru 13; - Closed Year Round

It seems that they're more plentiful the further towards the ocean one goes.

Any ideas on how to catch them? What I've caught in the past has always been incidental while mooching herring in fairly deep water.

I think they run in schools and like it near the bottom in deeper water with a flat smooth surface.

Plunk the water type you describe is where we caught them. We catch them using lead minnow style jigs on the bottom. Bouncing it along as we go. I believe the thump helps attract them. One of the better jigs we used was the metzlar mooch a jig....heavy cut plug herring imitation jig. 6 oz size. The weight of the jig was to combat the tidal flow.
