Pulling Pots with a bouy new
      #35281 - 07/30/01 07:32 PM

Being the cheap skate that I am I have been looking for a alternative to purchasing a pot puller for deeper sets.
The setup I have been looking to create uses a bouy that connects to a rope anchor puller mechanism. Then you connect the rope to the boat cleat and take off until the pot is raised to the bouy. Then go back to the bouy and put the pot in the boat. This would be great for anything over 100 ft.

The ultimate way to do it would be a anchor locking mechanism that could be attached/removed from the pot rope. Wonder if a cheap anchor bracket that is used on boats would work? I heard danielson has a anchor puller that can be used in this system. Ideas on where these area available?

I have seen pulleys that can be slipped over a rope or cable. These don't have the locking mechanism attached. Surprised nobody make something like this...If they do I haven't seen it yet.

Hey Marty,

One problem with the system you describe is that after the pot has been pulled to the surface, the tasty little critters will continue to escape as long as the pot is still in the water, awaiting your retrieval. You could easily lose a couple dozen from each pull with this process.

Also, if you wanted to use this system in Hood Canal, you would lose a pot or two with this method, as folks would run over your line for certain. Tangle with other pots could also occur. You would be quite unpopular.

RJ has also been trying to figure out how to do what you propose.

I dunno....being a cheapskate myself, I would try to figure out a barter system for a ready made pot puller from some handy dude that makes his own and needs advertising or a webpage!

I expect we will be seeing you next year in the Canal. Make sure and take lots of friends opening day....If you follow my directions, you can easily fill 8 limits in the allotted 4 hours. Not enough room? Tow an inflatable to hold your gear!

If you decide to use pellets for bait, make sure you have plenty of Mike's Glo-scent shrimp oil. Soak bait in it for at least an hour prior. We use a custom recipe for bait.

In combat shrimping, we always have pots set next to ours that are pulled nearly empty. Our pots will have at least a limit! Scent is your #1 consideration in shrimping.

Maybe I should change my moniker to Shrimp Lady?

It would be a good way to pull the deep set crab pots in the local harbor. I might be crazy enough to try it down there but some of those sets go 300?. Thats just to much line unless you pull go back for slack and pull again. I am sure you have some trade secrets for the local combat shrimping gained through experience. A bouy puller would work in uncrowded waters. I don't really have the room in the present boat to install one of these pullers. Would like to get one after the boat upgrade.

I figure for the bouy part a couple of five gallon white buckets with lids would be enough to support the pot...need to test that after I find some of the anchor puller rigs. If its the same as a cheap anchor bracket for a boat....easy and cheap. Would need to make sure the release would line up as you pulled the rope up.
If you know of a pot puller manufacturer that needs some ad space....I know this guy
