Wow! I just got back from crabbing and I have never seen that many people! We got 8 nice big Dungies. The minus tide right before New Years Eve must of stirred up alot of people though.

Just bought 2 new traps, cant wait to soak em!! Any one hear how the oregon coast is doing for crabs?

Just an update to my last post, Went out on New Years Day to Newport and went Crabbing. I looked at the tide chart to check when the low/high was, but forgot to look at the size of the tide. Anyway caught almost 9 feet of water coming back into Yaquina bay even my weighted traps slid around. Waited it out until the slack, and got a couple of female dungies....No keepers though.  No one else on the dock was doing any good either. Next weekend should be much better. Also an FYI if you go Id recommend Turkey or Chicken parts, as Newport has some real "Houdini" Seals, that were able to pop open the sides of my trap and steal the salmon heads. All day long!! Grrr.. The box with the turkey legs in it wasnt messed with at all. Any who, have fun!

Anybody tried out a head lamp to chase them? If it is bright enough it would be easier to carry.
I have a super bright led one coming so will let you know if ever shows up. Stupid back orders.

We've always used small bait cages, but last time we were out the sea lions pried those open too. I was thinking of putting a two or three zip ties on each cage. It would be a pain to have to cut them each time we need to put in a new bait, but not as frustrating as having your bait stolen each time you drop. The sea lions in Yaquina are the worst, with Alsea Bay running a close second.
My favorite bait is shad, but I ran out, so maybe we'll have to try chicken or turkey. So we know the sea lions don't like it, but how about the crabs?

I've got some Chicken and Turkey legs that I've been "ripening" in my garage for a few weeks. BOY is it ever stinky!!! The few female dungies sure seemed to like it! I ran into a guy while crabbing, who said his favorite oregon coast bait was, get this, Mink Parts. I kid you not. His friend ran a mink farm and saves the carcasses for him. I have also heard of using some scents to help add some "aroma" to attract crabs. Im going to try adding a film canister, with some holes in it, adding some cotton balls into it, and maybe some sardine oil? Marty we may need you scent expertise here!!!

Never really looked into crab scents......YET. perhaps if you freeze your scents in a block of ice it will continue to disperse as it melts. Not sure what the crabs will come running for other than turkey, chicken, or fish pieces.
no doubt they use their noses to find stuff.

One of my employees' parents own a mink ranch. We tried it once and got a few. I couldn't stand the smell of them and swore I wouldn't use them again.
They said they sell lots of mink carcasses for crab bait. My number one bait of choice is shad, but I'm out until they run in June. I'll have to give the chicken a try. I also heard you can use a can of tuna. Just punch holes in it with a diagonal can opener. Anything is worth trying to frustrate those furry pests. I'm thinking of buying some commercial style crab pots. I havn't had good luck with the rectangular traps.

When you drop the pot be sure the opening is pointed towards the travel direction or the crabs have trouble getting in.

Crab scents....ok
butyric acid (best attractant), caprylic acid, caproic acid, lysine, citric acid, glycine, and betaine.Some of these when put into the proper release agents will attract crabs for 14 days...have fun Most of these are water soluable and will need to be put into a release agent (jello, soaked into newspaper and compacted, Or good ole dirt soaked in the stuff) Or you can always make boilies (carp) and put them in a container. Hardest part will be to get it to release slowly into the water but hey...you asked what attracts crabs....you got it [ 01-05-2002: Message edited by: Marty ]

Your the best Marty! Will see if I can wrangle up some of those scents!
kryszcki, Gi-Joes had a commercial quality round (360 access!) cage trap, for 99$. It had sides that lower when on the bottom and lidt when pulled. They weigh about 30# or so. Feel like great quality. I may get one and add it to my collection. Ill let you know how they work.......now I just need a boat to haul all my traps around ![[Wink]](images/icons/wink.gif)

Jeep... if you ever get down to Tillamook, I saw
a really nice selection of crab rings and traps in different sizes and styles at the sporting goods store on the north end of town when I was there the last time. Prices were more reasonable and better selection than anywhere I have seen in the Portland area. The slip ring kind don't let the crabs out when you pull them up, so the nice ones can't get away, but they might not keep the sea lions totally out. They had 3 different sizes of the commercial style traps. Kryszcki.

P.S.
Jeep... a boat is definitely the ticket, but if you're on the dock, you might run down to Alsea Bay (Waldport) and give the dock there a try. I've tried both Yaquina and Alsea docks a couple of times, and done better at Alsea. Too much fresh water in the bay now though. Kryszcki.

Thanks for the info kryszcki, I'll wait for the rains to subside a bit then head down to Waldport. Where is the dock at in waldport? Is it fairly easy to find

Going south, go over the Alsea Bay Bridge and take a left at the first traffic light. Head east about 1/4 mile... you'll see a grocery store on the left and then a sign pointing to the waterfront park which has a boat ramp and the public fishing pier. It's open at night too. There are always a couple of sea lions there that will steal your bait if you don't take steps to foil them. Kryszcki.
