Halibut derby
      #35445 - 04/15/02 12:28 PM

The Port Angeles Salmon Club announced the Halibut Derby for this year. Of course I can't find the dam paper again. Anyway the dates are set. Will keep an eye open for them.

Ok found the paper... June 1-2 $5,000 for first
and cash down to 25th. More info from the chamber of Commerce at 360 452-2363

Hey Aunty I want to follow you out if its possible.I will be off for the next 6 weeks or so I plan on trying to catch a few halibuts but need a starting point I still have your coords from last year.I like to launch at anacortes or deception pass.Any spots for butts within an hour boat ride from there?I have tried hein bank but cant seem to figure out the butts there. How about middle bank on the canadian Border.

Does anyone have the coords for swiftsure bank or coyote bank?

Fishmasterdan,

Uh oh, I won't be winning after all. I filled my boat with top secret fishermen who have the ability to find and catch the huge ones. [Big Grin] I expect them to take #1 and #2 prizes. [Big Grin]

The weigh in will be at the PA launch. You will have a designated boundary to fish, and some of those spots are outside the boundary.

I can't tell you where we will be putting in this time. I am under orders to be *zipper* about it. You will catch an adequate fish at the coordinates I gave you though. [Wink]

Its a water weigh in so be sure to come by boat to the launch. It is the Yacht club ramp as the weigh in head quarters. It is also possible to launch at the hook but don't pull out until you weigh in at the yacht club. Yacht club ramp is just west of the boat haven. Still grumbling they set the date for the river opener. Since I am no halibut stud...well half ain't so bad [Razz] . I might be steelheading instead...will see how the boat is doing first.

I wonder why Marty didn't post this in the Derby category? I think he has so many categories, he can't keep track of them all anymore. [Wink]

Fishmasterdan, what's the good word? Are you in this thing? [Cool]

I am thinking about jumping in the problem is I havent figured out how catch these darn butts yet.I have benn off work (between jobs) for 3 weeks and have been running all around the straits looking for a good hole but havent really caught on yet.I landed 1 small one that was about 5 pounds at middle bank. That was my first lesson on were they hang out.Still trying to figure out the bets way to fish for them and where they like to hang out.

RJ and Marty I wish I had seen this post last night to give you guys a quicker report. I fished with Aunty,Mike and Gooose yesterday. We didn't get any hookups and only saw one other on. We were surprised to see the board so full on our arrival at 2:00. Mike and Gooose worked their butts off to get us on the spots. Marsha was the usual gracious host! [Smile]

Thanks Mike and Marsha...I had a great time.
Gooose it was a joy to fish with you once again!

FJ...out.

It wasn't a total loss... Got to meet Marty, see his boat, and have a laugh or two. The fishing company was excellent also. [Big Grin]

Last year, Freshwater Bay was a bust. So we didn't even bother with it, and the biggest fish were still out on the Rockpile. We were after the biggest weren't we? [Wink]

We tried everything. Mike went right for the secret "goodies" Marty gave us. No hits. Mike caught an octopus and stuck it on, no hits. Tried herring and mackerel... tried oils and gels... It still boils down to being at the right place at the right time. (RJ, shut up!) [Wink]

Circle hooks suck. I suspect at least one or more times gooose got "snagged" on the bottom, he was actually encountering a 150 pound butt. [Wink] [Razz]

Thanks for all the help Marty. FJ and gooose, thanks for coming along for the show. We will get them next year! [Cool]
