This year's deer new

Here's a better picture of the 3pt I got a few weeks ago. The 3rd points are small and hidden in this pic. You can still see part of the arrow sticking out of him. Went right into the lungs and stopped at the shoulder.

Good job there Nick.

I have a lot of respect for those that go out and get nice bucks with a bow.

He was real a dark gray which usually shows they are a bit older. Not a bad sized one either, but not huge.

Port Angeles. But I have been hunting Sequim a lot this month. I didn't get that buck in Sequim but I did see plenty of bigguns there! All on private property

Thanks, and yes, it was an interesting looking buck. It was big and dark like a 4+ year old, but it's antlers grew like a 2 year old's. But age doesn't effect the antler size after the 3rd year, testosterone levels and diet do. So for all I know it could be so old that it's testosterone levels dropped significantly and had a poor food source. I will take pictures of the teeth so that maybe someone here can try to age it for me, since that is really the only accurate way to age a deer. The head is frozen right now, but once I thaw it out to cut the antlers off it, I will take a pic of it's grill.

Oh, and the story behind this buck. I saw two 3 points and a 2 point with a few does. They were in a small clearing and when they saw me they ran into the brush. The bigger 3 point took off and I didn't even bother to try to find him and lose the other. The 2 point took off as well. The smaller 3 point walked into the edge of the brush. So as to not lose this one, I went around to the other side of the brush and snuck up behind it. I spotted it quartering away from me and I took a shot through an opening in the brush at about 30-35yds and hit it dead nuts in the sweet spot. It dropped and gurgled, but I took one more shot right through the spine in it's neck, severing it's spinal cord, just to make sure it was out. It didn't even take one step after that first shot anyways but I wanted to be sure.

So about two weeks ago, I got access to a total of about 50 acres of prime hunting private land now. There are 5 properties that are all joined together and consist of tall grass, maintained grass, woods, a creek, a pond completely surrounded by thick woods, apple and other fruit trees. I told the lady of the first property I got access to that I already filled my tag. She has wanting these deer off her property because they have been giving her and her neighbors hell. This lady talked to all the neighbors to get me access, but I ended up filling my tag elsewhere. She was kind of bummed because she wanted them gone. Prior to me filling my tag, I had told her I would give her some venison if I got one off of her or her neighbor's land. She used to hunt years ago, but she is now older and disabled. So she went and got a disabled hunter deer tag. Since she cannot draw back a bow and cannot perform the tasks needed to harvest a deer, I helped her fill her freezer and remove one of the problem deer at the same time.. As a thank you for me helping her harvest and process the deer, I got a few cuts of venison, a nice rack, and access to a large chunk of land to hunt for years to come!

Good Job Nick! You are having one hell of a fall. Nice getting to go arch one for someone that can use the meat, but can't do the job themselves. There is just no down side.

Anybody else notice the "nipples" on the front points of that 2nd deer? Weird, huh?

Also, I saw a spike, a 2pt, and a 3pt last night over there, and this morning as I was retrieving my arrow that I left in the creek when I gutted that deer, I saw a 5pt. I saw the same 5pt down the road a couple weeks ago at night time as I was coming back from bear hunting. I was searching for it the following day and that is when I met that landowner. Looks like I will have to pass those up this year. She told me that there has been a 4pt there the last two years. Maybe the same resident buck.

Anybody know how to apply for a 2nd deer tag? Is it too late?

It is as simple as going to the vendor and getting a second tag. It is something like 21.00 dollars for the tag.

I got my deer this year also. I didn't get it until the second to last day that I was up there, as I had spent nearly everyday that I was there trying to help get other guys in camp their elk. I did manage to sucessfully call in for three seperate people, no less than three to four bulls a piece. But no one got a shot off. Actually the last one that I called in took two hours to get in and when I finally got him in at about 60-65 yds. two jackasses came walking in right bewtween myself and the shooter. No kidding. Bows on their shoulder and calls on their backs. No friggin clue. So here is the pic of the nice sized doe that I stuck the next day. One shot, 55 yds, uphill and quartering slightly toward me. I actually had the pin set on her just behind the shoulder blade and she squatted back on the string jump and caught the arrow just in front of the shoulder. You can see the entry hole just behind the leaf. she went about forty and piled up. Blew the left lung in three pieces and managed to not touch a single bone. Got about 60+ lbs. of meat out of it without including the hamburger meat. Just to give you an idea of size I am 215 lbs and 5'11"

Pretty sure that wasn't me. I was Idaho for the season and I haven't been in Montessano or the area around for a god four years. Unless you were in Idaho.

No, I try to stay away from hunting along major highways, lol!

This is the kind of place I like to hunt.
