While driving back from my bro's house this morning, I noticed a small flock dropping into a small ditch. With it blowing & freezing like it is up here, open water is getting scarce. I ask my son if he wants to brave the elements and he was on it. We get geared up and I lay out the game plan. It's pretty much a cake walk I say. We'll just sneak up to the ditch and we'll be right on top of them. By the time I get close to the ditch, I'm feeling like a popcicle and I can see ducks milling around. SWEET!! We are crouched down and getting closer. When we get within about 10 yards if that, a greenhead launches out of the ditch and all hell erupts. There was literally over 100 mallards in a 2 foot wide ditch. Surprised would be an understatement. I hear my son shoot, then it's time for me. Pull the trigger and nothing. SHIAT safety's on. I click it off and fire and I drop a nice fat drake, second shot nothing. Huh??? gun wouldn't fire. In my exccitement, I pulled a rookie boner. Didn't pull my glove off and didn't get the safety fully disengaged with my fat fingered gloves on. Long story short, I got the one. I ask my boy how he did. Nada. I asked him if he flock shot, YEP he says. Oh well, we discuss what we did right and what we did wrong on the way home in the nice warm truck.

Sounds like you and I must share some of the same genetics or something!

I do that all the time! In this kind of weather I know enough spots where I could jump hundreds of ducks over the course of the morning. But the problem is when you jump a big wad of ducks (especially big fat greenheads) even the experienced hunter's brain sometimes doesn't work right.
If it is 3 or 4 ducks, we usually will get a couple. If it is 25 or more, well, you just never know.
Cool story, and glad you had a run down after that. When me and my crew screw up a big flock like that we all just say "We SUCK!".

Friend and I were hunting Mason Valley in Nevada. He reloaded the shells for the day so I left my shell bag in the rig. We had the best fly day ever and shells that wouldn't fire. greens, pins and teal everywhere and all we got was click pop and then the shot would hit the water right in front of us. 30 min walk back to the rig 30min back and ended up with 3 ducks each and something to talk about for life.
