Anybody into mini-bikes?
      #359559 - 12/26/08 02:51 PM

I mean the old school tubular frames with 6" wheels and a horizontal lawnmower engine.

Bought a DB 30 for the boys, made in China. With the stock 2.8 HP motor and a weak clutch, I can barely get it moving, but it launches like a rocket with the boys on it (short run in the shop).

At the price of $199 at Joes, it was hard to beat as a starter platform. Been doing some research on them, and apparently it is an easy mod up to hold a 6.5 HP Honda clone engine using a plate that attaches to the stock mounts and the engine and an upgraded clutch. I'll also add a front brake, as all it has is a disc rear brake at the moment.

I think I'll keep one stock for the boys, and mod out another for me so that I can keep up with them.

6.5 hp. would be a good motor. I have been considering building one my self and while researching came upon a great product. Adding a torque converter increases preformance without the need for major engine work. Just a thought.

When I was 9 or 10 my dad bought me 1 from the swap meet with a 3hp motor on it, not enough power. I saved my allowance for a while and found a 5hp that made it the fastest mini-bike on the block, for a while, then the kid on the next block over showed up with a 6.5hp that blew my hog away. Alot of good memories on that bike.

Yeah, I saw the torque converters, but from what I read the stock engine is crap, so I'll upgrade that and probably put in a Comet clutch for the time being.

I think I'll start with a heavy duty bike (mine), and then try to put in one of the torque converters on the other.

I got a Yami TTR 90 that my son has outgrown. Sweet little starter bike. If anyone is looking for a kids bike. Price is right.

I'm thinking about that FH. Nice bike.

In the mean time, here is how our two bikes look.

Stock bike.

Dad's bike.

Those are pretty cool old skool bikes!!!
I'm assuming you took the chain guard off to put the new clutch on?
a neighbor kid had one back in the day without a guard. That thing was death on pant legs

Put the chain guard and a clutch guard on as well today after the test ride. The red bike hauls ass. I mean when you are rolling and hit the gas, dirt flies.

Cool bikes. I had a friend with a two stroke motor one on if I remember right...it might have been a chainsaw engine.

I got you covered here Andy...let's turn that thing into a human flyswatter. Nothing like a little turbo action to set your a$$ back on the seat a bit. I'd love to hear that thing spool up....you might just need wheelie bars to keep the nose down.
