I'm trying to upgrade rigs soon and I'm looking hard at a Dodge 2500 Extended cab longbed diesel. Not towing anything extremely heavy just a 21' open sled with smaller camper hopefully. Occasionally a light car on a car hauler, say 7000lbs max. I just really like diesel for towing and better fuel economy.
I'm just trying to decide which year and which motor to go with. I know the 12valve motor is 98.5' and down and the 24valve is 98.5 and up. Rear discs started in '02. Would really like a 5 or 6 speed manual.
Wondering if anyone has any advice regarding the fuel economy between the 2 motors and towing or any advice at all. Not looking for max power, just a reliable strong setup that gets better than the 12-13 mpg I'm getting now while towing.
thanks sean

Thanks for the reply fishhog. Are those numbers empty or towing? Also just curious what setup you have? ie. Single rear wheel or dually, rear axle ratio, auto or manual, longbed/shortbed, megacab/extended cab.
thanks

I have a 2005 quad cab 2500 CRD 4X4 auto. The only thing I have done is added a SMARTY programmer to it. I get 17ish around town and 22ish hwy. Towing a 20' willie FULLY loaded I get about 15. I love this truck, the only thing I would change would be a 8' bed instead of the 6.5'. I worked for Dodge for ten years and I would only buy a 04.5-06. Just my .02.
CRD= common rail diesel, both Dodge and Chev use it.

Skyguy, what is so bad about the early 24valve? I've heard about a 53 block, not sure what that was. I'd like a newer, but not sure my budget will allow it.
On another note, what kind of willie do you have?

Mitch, nothing wrong with the 24v, I just like the powertrain combination with the 04.5-06, you get the American axels and the tranny's were well built.
The sled is Tridub1's, I just take it out once in a while. It's a Willie Predator with a 200hp optimax, she's beutiful!

I see. yeah I'd like to grab a '02 with the Standard Cummins/NV4500Hd 5 speed or HO Cummins/NV5600 6 speed, 3.73 gears and rear disc brakes. I think the axles are still Dana for that year, 50 or 60 front, 80 rear. You think an '02 with that setup would get about the same mileage as your rig?
Also, do you know what degree bottom Tridub1's sled is? 5 or 10? I've been looking into that sled as well.
