I plan on being down at Copalis for a long weekend with a couple of buddies (second weekend in January), and would like to bump a few ducks somewhere in the greater Grays Harbor area. We've got dekes, but no boat...anyone willing to share any decent walk-in wade-able spots they know of? Since we all live Seattle-north, getting down there ahead of time to ask for private property permissions is difficult with work and family schedules.
Feel free to PM or reply.
Thanks in advance!

Boatless in Copalis. I'll send you a pm but it might not be much help.

I'm going to take a shot here and guess there will be a fair bit of standing water in about a week or two, once this silly winter thing passes and things warm up. May make for some decent puddle jumping.

If it is like timber company land, then you can probably hunt it. If you are just in the back roads and have to cross a fence, then you are probably trespassing, and if there are ducks there, it probably is already being hunted or managed for hunting.

Archy you have a dog for retrieving? I know a couple salt water sites on the Harbor that might work.

I have a black lab. I have never formally trained her for hunting, but I think someone may have started (we got her as a rescue stray). I might give her a chance, but since I'm not sure how she'd do I'd rather not ruin a friend's hunt. She's a tad gun shy, but is a fanatic fetch dog and would likely return at least part of the bird to me, though I may only get beak and feet.
I've been looking at the state's Go Hunt mapping info on the various tideland areas in the Harbor...looks like they could produce, though I agree the dog would likely be a big help.

I know of several spots that would be better opportunity than what WDFW advertises for the bay but you'll need a way to retrieve the birds.

I live 10 minutes north of Copalis. Would be willing to loan you a single & double kayak. Don't duck hunt anymore but when we did we used to go to several sloughs on the Humptulips, now they mostly have houses around them. How about the "sink" at Ocean Shores? Is it open? Conner Creek?
Never used a dog for the sloughs but a treble hook & a chunk of lead reeled in a few mallards. Is duck snagging even legal? Should I have used barbless?
Looks like the sink is open:
Oyhut Unit
Location: South of Ocean Shores. South on Ocean Shores Blvd. Left on Marine View Drive or left on Sportsman Way.
What: Ducks and Geese
How: Protected marshes are available here on the lee side of the Ocean shores peninsula. When the weather has picked up on the Ocean or inside Grays Harbor, the ducks will flock to this area for protection. The worse the weather, the better this unit is. If bringing a boat, this area requires a good solid boat, no car toppers here. Be careful of the tides as is with most tidal marshes, there is a lot of muck and it could be very easy to get stuck or stranded.

That's a great offer Letty, and I may take you up on it. I'm eyeballing a couple of canoes for sale. Need to chat with my hunting partners, once they get back from their Xmas travels. I'll let you know what we work out.
Oyhut was one of the areras I had looked at...though that car-topper comment makes me a bit hesitant about canoeing this time of year.
