The Queets is over 87,500 cfs this morning, and still headed straight up...average flows for this date is 4,960 cfs!
Over here on the dryside, we had a foot of snow in our yard @ dinner time yesterday, 12 hours later it's all but gone, not much rain yet...but we had wind gust to 74 mph!

I heard about that from someone at the Yakima Training Center. She said she had 10" of snow Tuesday and woke up to 1" today.
I was supposed to head there and do some work, but the pass is closed so I guess I'll wait 'til next week.

It was in 96 when we lost or place on the Kalama, just like this. Our little piece of heaven turned into what looked like a Mt. St. Helen's blast zone. I'm sure to pit toilets at Blue Creek ar getting a good douching.

Satsop is at 36,600 and going straight up. The Hydraulic predictor has it going to 38.8 feet which is way above the Major Flood Stage. In 06 it was up to 37,500 and did a Hell'of a lot of damage. Marty's exactly right, our rivers will deffinately be changed when they drop back down. Going to get way worse by tonight and into tomorrow all over before it starts to turn and drop ..

They tried to close the center off the universe, McCleary. Go figure.
Closed and re-opened Hwy 108 between Kamilche (Shelton)and McCleary twice, now it is closed again. Slides.

That wind was killer down in Tillamook on Sunday. Yesterday I drove up Little River Road between Hurricane Ridge Rd and Black Diamond Rd out in Port Angeles and I could hardly get up that road with my big Dodge and 4WD. The ice alone was making my truck drive up the road sideways even at a slow crawl in 4WD. The other big problem were the trees that were downed left and right. It must have been from that windstorm Sunday night. I couldn't believe how bad it was up there. I had to keep going for a while until I found a place to turn around. My anti-lock brakes did absolutely nothing for coming down that last hill before Black Diamond Road and I thought I was going to end up tumbling down the clearcut above the farm fields. All that ice and snow is melting fast. I foresee the tribal lands at the mouth of the Elwha underwater.

No worries, I will just have to turn the bottom of my driveway into a makeshift boat-launch when the 'halis decides to blow again.

the way the last couple high waters have gone, when this one's over, i wouldn't be surprised if you have to go right instead of left. 3 years ago you could wade across that side channel, now the thing's 6 feet deep in the summer!

i've seen BC area change very drastically over the years with these fast moving flows. some for the best.... then others that just piss a guy off.
whats very strange is how some rivers seem to maintain thier channels from year to year. while others just get wrecked.

the worst part is that these floods never seem to change anything for the better on the rivers i fish. seems like every time there's a flood the rivers get shallower and the holes get filled in.

Really? That's actually pretty cool. I always liked that little side channel for spinner fishing. I bet if you find a boulder or downed tree, the fish will be stacked up thick in there and a float setup would kill 'em.

Whatcom County is shutting down one road at a time from flooding. The Samish had a big mudslide that shut down some businesses, and another mudslide took out a house. The Mt. Baker Hwy is shut down at from an avalanche.
What the hell is going on out there!??

So very true. The last couple of years has made everything wide and flat. We need 10 years of normal flows to get everything to ditch back up...

Look at the floods we got in the 1800s and early 1900s. They put the floods of the past 30-50yrs to shame. They had "100 year floods" every decade, sometimes twice a decade. That's how the rivers get how they are now.
I have also found that when the floods happen, my favorite holes often change for the worst. It seems like the river is ruined, but it's not. I learned to start fishing a flood-effected river as if it was my first time wetting a line there. Interestingly, more often than not, I found that the spots where fish were never holding ended up being the best holes. Makes sense in a way because rivers always follow a pattern of a flat, then a drop in elevation, then a flat, then a drop in elevation until sea level is reached. This creates tailouts, runs, slots, holes etc... The nice slots and holes get filled in, and the shallow wide stretches get carved out, so there is still a balance.
I've heard people talking about how X river used to be killer and the fish would stack up at Y hole but the previous year's flood ruined it. Having never fished that river before, I methodically worked the water and found the fish holding somewhere else. Those same people who said the river was ruined quickly moved in and were fishing shoulder to shoulder with me.
It gets boring fishing the same holes year after year. Don't you get all excited when you travel somewhere to fish a new river for the first time? I know I do! It'll be like fishing a new river.
