Hinkers...
      #361577 - 01/10/09 02:59 PM

Pez and I went Hinker hunting today. In case you are still wondering what a hinker is...here you go! Mojo with his limit and Pez's 3...

Pez winged this guy and had to chase it about 400 yards, or a mile and a half if you were Pez. He got in a little hand to beak with one of these viscious buggers... it even threw mud on his face. Actually there might have been a faceplant involved, but I missed it while fetching my bird.

Here is Pez with his load of HONKERS...

Another great adventure Brett. Love it when birds actually work like they are supposed to. My calling is getting back in the groove, but I definitely need more practice. As always, good times, and even some honkers for the smoker. Might have to do this again next weekend...

Nice load of hinkers. Too bad Pez got bitch-slapped by a boid, but that sometimes is the nature of the hunt.

To true Dean. Got bit by one once and it drew blood. I probably deserved it for killing his buddy and only wounding it.

Rich, you missed a good hunt, but if you'd have been there we would have been done by 0900...

I'm just glad the ground was frozen enough to allow us to drive out in the field. Packing those 7 geese at 10+ pounds a pop, plus all our gear, out to the road would have sucked.

I made a fatal mistake today. I broke open my Saunders Traffic call while it was still dark, to clear something out of the reed. It sounded like crap all day. Once I got home, I got it tuned right again. I won't be messing with it again for a while.

Rich you were right about broke in tone boards, My SMH is starting to sound better every time I use it. I'm sure it has nothing to do with my calling getting better. I still sound better using my flute though.

Joe whats a nonresident license gonna cost? That pic is too much! Must be crazy having a low flock approach across that field?

First, sorry about eradicating you kin-folks...

Second, try having 3 flocks approaching across that field at the same time, only to have 2 land 400 yards short (the small flock got hammered)...

Third, a non-res small game license is $81.75. You are good to go if you have a Fed Duck Stamp...

When you have to use binocs to spot your birds, you are hunting Honks the right way.

Shoot Kev, you got great honker hunting right there. I'm sure you know someone with dekes. All you need is a winter wheat field a ditch, and a bunch of shells. It's easy...

Bacota, we shot 4 of those birds with #4 3" shells. IMO, 3.5 inch shells encourage people to take marginal shots. Yes my 3rd shell was a 3.5, but I only killed on bird with it (the second of a double). Find a good field, call 'em in to 25 yards and kill 'em with #2 or #4 shot.

People often cripple geese because they underestimate the size of those birds. The truth is, if you are hunting over decoys, and you can call the birds decently, you should be able to get shots at 30 yards. I'd go #2, BB, BBB and I'd use 3 inch shells. Buy the highest velocity shells you can afford. With steel, speed kills.

Plus, 3.5" shells hurt more when you shoot a box of them...

Good times. Goose hunting's pretty simple if you're in the right spot. This time we were in a pretty good one - thanks Mojo.

I like 3" mag shells, but even 2 3/4 should be fine - if you put the bird in the middle of the pattern, and if the birds are in range. The former is usually my problem.

It always takes me a couple hunts to remember that they're big, and not only seem closer than they are, but also are moving a lot faster than they look.

I see that you're in the Seattle area. My advice would be to take your scatter gun with several boxes of different ammo down to the wharf, or one of the city parks and experiment on the local boids. Don't sweat the cops....they'll be grateful you're thinning out the vermin population.

3.5 inch would be a bit overkill at 25 yards.

Plus at 25 bucks a box for the Black Cloud 3.5" shells, I'll stick with the 11.50 a box 3 inch shells Remington and Winchester Steel. I tell you what that Black Cloud ammo does the deed, but I can't afford any more this season.

We just ate one of those geese for dinner - Mojo's goose curry recipe. Dang good eats.

The other two are smoker-bound.

Take a 3/4 inch piece of plywood 4x4 inches square. Paint it white. Then paint the edges medium brown. Make a couple dozen. You now have a Seattle Goose decoy. Toss in nice grassy area along waterfront park.

But then I wouldn't be able to get my arse on a plane (I love to fly) and I wouldn't get to learn from good friends and great great company. If I wanted to just kill Hinkers I would just go sit on ma and pas deck and wackem as they fly over headed for the clearwater. LIL

Sounds like fun and all guys, it really does, but I'll be the first to admit that I lack the testicular fortitude it takes to go bird busting on the waterfront.

Those are some nice birds guys. Your lucky with all the snowfall we got right in the first 2 weeks of december all the geese that usually stop here flew down south to you guys.
Joe if you want some 3in black clouds i bought 3 cases last year before the prices went way up and i will sell them to you for what i got them for.
