This morning the wife and I get up, I make some coffee and she goes to let the dogs in. But there are no dogs.
Now, I know they were just outside because I was awakened at 0600 with Gozer's paws up on my bed. "Get down" I said, thinking he just wanted up on the bed. A second later he starts heaving. That "I'm gonna barf" sound all dog owners know. I tear out of bed and run downstairs with the dogs in tow, and manage to get them both out just before Gozer pukes in the flowerbed. Phew! At least he tried to warn me...
So I just leave them in the yard and go back to bed to sleep in a bit.
Now Colleen's saying the dogs are gone - but it's only been a couple hours. Apparently, someone (me) left the gate open. Years ago, we had a great shorthair named Jake. When he would escape the back yard, we'd find him sitting sadly on the front porch apparently thinking "I'm out, but I just want to be back in." Not these dogs.
So both of us take off looking and calling for the dogs. No trace. Because they're obnoxious pups, they tear each other's collars off in about a day, so we don't have ID tags on them. We're beginning to regret not getting the DOG ID chips inserted when we had the chance.
After I walk all around the neighborhood and through 2 nearby parks, I get a call from the wife saying "I just talked to animal control - they have 2 yellow labs that were picked up a couple hours ago."
So we meet the dog cop at a local grocery store parking lot and she turns over the dogs to us, with no citation, not even a lecture.
The story is that they were running down nearby Boise Avenue toward Broadway when an employee at the local veterinarian saw them while on her way to work. She piled them in her car, took them to work, then called animal control.
As you can see in the pic below, being a runaway takes it out of a guy.

Today I'm thankful for the kindness of strangers. Tomorrow we'll get ID chips put in the dogs.

Brett, when I started reading this my stomach tied in a knot. I got Bailey chipped the day we got her. I was at the vet anyway...
Glad the dingos made it home safe. I'll go kick mine for not telling her brothers to behave better. She's perfect you know.

As you can probably tell from the post, we were pretty relieved to get them back safe. We just had to put an old family dog down on New Years Eve - it would have been pretty hard on everybody to lose another, let alone two.

In the picture I see two totally innocent angels. How dare you accuse them of being hooligans. Glad you got them back.

The curiosity of labs... Mine is 10 and still gets a wild hair to go roaming around the hood once in awhile. He never gets very far and comes loping back in under an hour but we live a block away from a fairly busy street. Always worries me when he goes roundin. Sometimes he takes off on my daughter when she is home alone with him just because he knows she wont walk around to get him and he'll get to ride in her car. Goofball likes to sit upright in the seat like a person and look around like a prince on parade.
Glad you got 'em back unharmed and with no fines.

Finally got around to getting a microchip implant for my dog, Freddy. Lady Vet took a close look at me and suggested I get one for myself. Told her I don't drink Crown Royale at Drooler Tillas anymore so I probably don't need one for now.

Not that hot Mike, but I still have occassional visions of one of my nurses last time I was hospitalized....she was wearing a visible red thong under her white scrubs. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Always wondered if that was prescribed treatment in their emergency cardiac unit cause I didn't see her after that day. At any rate, thank you Lord....

Glad you got the dogs back. My two pulled a stunt like that some time ago, only problem they hitched a ride with was the park police, and they ended up in the county lockup. $200+ later.....
