Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend an appropriate rod for a line i have? It is a DT 7/8 weight SILK line of 82'.
I'd like to spend less than 300 on a rod for this for steelhead and smaller salmon...

I am going to be getting my next rod custom built from a Rainshadow blank. 11'-12', probably 11'6" 7wt switch rod. It's only going to cost $220. They look pretty sweet.

My suggestion is to contact Poppy at the Red Shed (do a google or contact him through this board). He is what I would consider a world class expert on lining rods. He also has a wide selection of both new and used 2 handers available at his shop.
I'm not sure an 82 foot DT 7/8 is ideal for any spey rod. Do you know how many grains the line weighs? That would help. It might be better to actually cut it and splice it to a running line, but I don't know how to do that effectivley with silk lines.
Your best bet may be to go buy a RIO spey line that fits a rod that fits your fishing style. Silk lines are something of a collectors item, and require a bunch of dressing to fish correctly. That is a lot like work, and fishing should be fun...

The way a rod loads is effected by the line weight/length. You'd be better off buying a rod you want, and then going to one of the full service spey shops that will let you try different line weights. It really is that important. There is some personal preference involved.
I'd at least recommend that you go to a "try" day for one of the shops and try some different rods. I didn't believe it until I tried it. Even lines marked as the same "weight" cast differently.
Don't get me wrong, you can adjust to anything, but setting up the rod/reel/line correctly will make your casts effortless.

Scipius, where are you located. Mojo is spot on if you live over in E. WA or Spokane. But if you live on the Wetside, Aaron at the Speyshop in Duvall is the man to see. Been around speys alot longer then most, and knows his stuff. Great guy, and can help you out. And like Poppy, will let you test drive as well. I know he has a sale on his demo rods.

thanks, i m in BC but travel to seattle often. I love casting silk lines and i was given this line as a gift so i'd like to give it a proper setup. If it doesnt work on a spey rod, i'll just use it on a single hander...thanks all.

Nick's choice of rod length may be pretty close to the max this DT line. Most spey lines are actually 120 foot, single handers at 90'. So 82' is pretty short for any 'long rod.'

Steelheadr 69, I thought Aaron's shop was in Carnation.
Scipius, I'd bet that your line is a DT7I single hand line. Something like an Decho 11'9"-4wt (double hand rating) or maybe a Decho 12'2"-5wt (double hand rating) should make that line go. A 4wt double hand rating usually casts pretty nice with a 7wt single hand line.
I have an 8wt JK Fisher rod that casts like gangbusters with a HCH silk line. Your DT7I line should be about the same as an HCH.
I may have a couple experienced rods that will work with that line and fit your budget.

It's up in that area somewhere. LOL. I think you go through Duvall to get to it. I know it's up in that vicinity. I can drive right to it, but don't ask me directions or towns. LOL.

Laughed out loud when I read Jerry's comment above. Used to live up there and could drive anywhere (blindfolded if you will). But that was back in the day ... (pre-1984).
Last time I was 'up there,' in a 38' motor home with Jeep behind ... I had to pull over a WSP office and ask where the hell was I .. and where the hell was Carnation, WA.
Trust me ... it takes one hell of a wide spot in the road to turn 50' of lost (and un-happy camper) around to go the other way and turn left a mile or so back.

Indeed we did my friend. Sigh ... going to a AA meeting every morning ... I can only 'fondly' (Bad Fred! Bad! Bad!) remember the taste. And I can .. just can't go there anymore.

Well lets back up here and put folks in context. Saw the info from Aaron on the get-together and it sounded like a hoot, so I e-mailed him on where to stay (the park there in Carnation). Get the info and call and get my 'reservation;' turns out to be the last place in the Park.
Aaron e-mails me back a couple of days later and asks if I have 'room' for a few more folks to bunk over. Sure, up to three in 'comfort,' four is they really need to, but they'll need sleeping bags as the fold out couch in front only holds two. COOL he e-mails back.
A week or so before the event I (dah Fred!) clicked in that I had no clue as to who would show up at 'my front door.' ......... the fellow from Carron Lines out of the UK. The rest of the weekend is history, but Gweneth and Jimmie Jack were quite surprised (poor choice of words) that a 'stranger' would take in and house/feed their folks; no questions asked before hand. It's a Canadian thing I guess.
Great Fellows, Great weekend, Great time for all!!! Save for one evening the fellows decided to have a few beers at a local Tavern .. and watched a knife fight! Trust me, you can't make this stuff up. How fast can you get "out of Dodge City?"
That aside, great time for all. Still correspond with some of the folks.
Only 'down side' was the slot I was parked in (save for being as far away from the river as you could get) was under a Black Oak tree. The 'seeds' from these things are huge and the oil as black as the Ace as Spades. Get some on/in your carpets? It's there for life.
