Ok so the Dog in this case is Desertdog. Dot stayed home as the planned hunt was more than I wanted to subject her to. 6 hr hike for 5 coveys. I had a rather stellar day and went 5 for 5 after missing the first 3 shots then missed the 6th to come up one short of a limit. My partner, a coworker, for the day was 0 fer a bunch. I am glad he was along as he witnessed my first triple. Where I hunt is a 2.5 hr drive from the house. The first 35 is paved the next 25 is good gravel and the next 15 is 2 track back into some very wild and big country. We saw 30-40 wild horses 60-70 mule deer 40 cantalopes 4 roster pheasants and a covey of quail. And no other hunters. A truly memorable hunt.

I'll be there at 0500...
O.k. not really I have to go gator fishing instead . I wish I could though. Bailey would have a hay-day on those birds. I'd need oxygen and a atv...

I see some dinners. I wonder how those birds would taste with a full beer shoved up there behind and put on the grill

D-Dog, you are on next fall! You might have to trade a hunt up here shootng honkers with Pez and I.
You never heard of "beer can up the butt chicken"? It rocks. Do a google. I bet it would be great with chukar too...

Keith, we'll do beer can chicken when you come out in March...unless a chukar comes along Never had one of them. Similar to pheasant? As SF indicated, good stuff! Hmmmm, gives me an idea for a Smith tilla dinner!!

Keith,
Beer in the butt chicken is fantastic. Here's a youtube bit... Beer in the butt chicken
Since those birds are a little smaller use a lilfisher size can (8oz) or a 12oz can. When slow cooked over indirect heat when you pick it up you will only get bones. It just falls apart. Pay attention to the pre prep on the outside before cooking. Rub them in olive oil and season to taste....

it's the only way to cook a whole bird, unless you use the turkey fryer

Keith, that's one proud looking pup...think she's claimed the birds even tho she missed the hunt.
In regard to the can-up-the-ass cooking, here's another consideration. Instead of beer, give it a coke or wine duech. I recall a recipe from the Brinkman's smokers that suggested using beer, coke, or wine instead of water to the water pan. The can-up-the-ass mode is simply a take off of the water pans which add flavor and moisture to the cooking meat.

Nice bunch of birds. Guess they pile up quick when you're hitting triples. Of course, if you pull that plug out you might hit 4? 5?. Best I've done is a good double.
I sure know the wife smiles a lot more when I walk in with chukars instead of ducks. As is always the case with chukars, sounds like you earned those birds.

I usually just dip parts in eg& milk followed by cracker crumbs and pan fry. Nice and moist and tasty but will have to try the beer up the butt(that just sounds wrong on somany levels) next time I have whole birds.
I have never shot like that ever. I was surprised myself. The payback for yesterday is today... getting old sucks. Think I'll go take a couple more Vicodin.

Hey Keith, Nice bag and good looking pup. Is it a Griffon or a Drath? Chukar hunting kinda sucked here in S. Idaho this year. Tons of Quail though and decent Pheasant. I have a female Griffon. Hell of a dog and personality. FW

Lunch
Fishwhisperer.. how chukar pops. are low also. Where I was hunting is known oor having LOTS of birds.. limits in less than 30 min. Not this year. We work hard for these birds but then I quess you usually have to work hard for chukar.
It was a good day
