I think they do because pain is part of the basic survival dynamic. Pain is an indicator that something is wrong and stimulates the fight or flight response. I'm just glad that fish can't scream because I'd have to quit fishing.

I saw a show several years ago proving that fish do not feel pain. They did an array of tests on the fish including but not limited to filleting off large hunks of the fish and then releasing them to see if it changed their reactions to stimuli. The fish seemed normal other than they were missing parts. The conclusion was that they didn't feel pain. How accurate it was I do not know but it was interesting.

All that matters is that we treat our catch with respect. Release any fish you are not going to eat as quickly as possible, without removing them from the water. Fish barbless to facilitate unhooking (and lessen damage to the fish). Get them to the boat as quickly as possible.
If you are retaining the fish, dispatch it immediately.
I did read a report by some scientists at UW that the nervous system of a fish is not as developed as warm blooded animals, and they have very few nerves in the mouth area. They apparently do not "feel" the hook. What freaks them out is the line pulling their head one way or another. I have seen fish grab a fly, hook themselves, and not start fighting till I started pulling the line. I don't think they feel pain in the same sense we do anyway.

the way steelhead turn their eyes down indicates to me there is some sort of pain, at least by the end of a battle.
when we stick ourselves with a hook, we keep fishing, when they bite one they keep eating
So yeah, if it aint a meal then let the fishy go

WW - coming from the mid-west we were told that if a fish's eyes were turned down it was feeding on the bottom, turned up feeding from the top; it takes a while for a fish to "rotate" eyes up or down. Wives tale or urban lengend?

PETA is now saying that fish learn from each other and communicate like warm blooded animals and we should not eat them.
I only fish for the stupid ones. I have a picture of a bass with distinct markings that we have caught for the last 3 years. I've caught several fish with tore up mouths that tells me that they didn't learn and possibly didn't feel all that much pain.
I also wouldn't eat a member of PETA so they are safe.

The balance of credible (hint, that means pretty much nada that PETA spews is credible) research indicates no pain stimuli receptors in fish.

Ok here is the your answer yes they do feel pain but only for a breef moment why you might ask becuase I am usually bashing in their skulls and throwin them into the fish box
