fished today this dock that run out in to about 30 feet of water. Spoted bass all ovet the dock couldnt get a bite. I use Crayfish colored crank bait no bite right past the fishes face. Tried free floated whole live nightcrawler. And no bite tried plastic worms and no bite. So confused there was largemouth and smallmouth holding around the dock every once and a while I see the bass move close to the surface and they just hang there and I couldnt get them to bite. What should I do what should I try?

I have good luck with floating rapalas(rainbow), but I don't bass fish that much, but if they are near the top, I can usually get a reaction, or a diving/floating frog(green/white) pattern, just my .02. As I said I don't fish bass much, but these do work!!

The first thing is it sounds like you were fishing a big lake, the water temp is just getting up to where they are moving up out of the winter layover when this happens they are very hard to catch, they are more interested in sunning themselves (you said they were in the surface water) They 2 things I would try is stay back from the dock and throw a wide wobble jerk bait like a yozory or the fenwick pin minnow the flashier the better with a pause every 3 feet. dont run the lure to close to the dock the idea here is get one fish to come out just a little bit to look at it, the other fish seeing this well race to be the one who eats it. the next method is toss a spinnerbait or jerk bait or crank bait, or even a leadhead with a grub/worm on it past the dock then reel as fast as you can past the edges of the dock the idea here is get the fish to do a knee jerk reaction. I do both in the order of they are written. catch 2 fish leave the dock for a while then come back lator and repeat steps 1 and 2. When I teach bassfishing to friends who dont fish bass I explane the bass are just like a cat if you can get the courious you can catch them. If your darg a string with a toy on it across the room the cat will pounce, and a bass well to but he dont have paws, he uses his mouth....DJ

My avdvice would be to take your time and fish slow. Try using a plastic worm or a Senko weighless. Toss it out and let sink real slow. I caught a 5lb largemouth last weekend using this method, it took me about 30 min. to get him but all the hard work paid off. If I new how to post a picture I would but I haven't figured it out yet. Good luck and tight lines. [ 06-03-2002, 09:35 AM: Message edited by: Fishmute8 ]

try dropshotting a 3 inch bait or pitch a weightless senko 4 inch. if they dont bite that try just a nightcrawler weightless.
