Anyone besides me remember or have an appreciation for that old Elvin Bishop song?
I'm off to the UK for five weeks on business and it looks the gamefish I will be limited to pursuing while there will be the wily (and ugly as sin) carp. Anyone ever target carp before?
I've seen them do it Ted Nugent style, with a crossbow/spinning reel combo. That always reminded me of the 'ol Pocket Fishermen (not ever to be confused with pocket fishin')...and didn't really seem all that sporting.
I used to fish for them on Lake Tapps with wonder bread balls...we'd wad several pieces and chum the water, wait til we saw fish, then cast our presentations out in the midst of our chum. I caught several enormous carp that way.
From what I have seen the Brits use sweetened corn in place of the wonder bread but generally use the same approach.
Anyone ever plant a big 'ol Jimmy Houston on a carp? If so...why? Seriously though....do people even fish for carp any more?

I have a friend that lives in Chelan. One day he took me fishing for trout in a small pond above Manson. No trout were to be had and the Carp were surfacing all around us. I ask my buddy...so how does one go about playing a few of those piggys...sadly neither of us had a clue. These fish were in the teener range! ![[Eek!]](images/icons/shocked.gif)

We catch those slab carp by useing dough balls. take a few pieces of bread (white) mush it together till ya get a nice doughy ball. thread it on your hook, no sinker. then through a few like balls around your hooked one. and they will come around. CAUTION ya better be on your poll when they hit I have two friends that sit on thier polls now cause they losts their GL3

Some of the best fishermen in the world are the tournament carp anglers. These guys play for big bucks!! Carp fishermen are a great source for new techniques/biats in still water situations. I would go looking to learn from the masters. the dough balls are called boilies and they got secret recipes like we do for egg cures.

My good friend from last years adventure claims to be just such an expert. He's also mentioned a bit about American style soft plastic baits...I am guessing these would be like 'pork baits' used by bass fishermen?
Maybe they've yet to discover the scent infused pink worm....hmmm.
He also mentioned that there are big bucks (or pounds as it were) in Carp fishing tournaments....maybe fishing for ugly fish isn't so bad after all?

While living in E. Wa I have killed a few using a variety of methods.
1) Bow and arrow with a bow reel. Pretty cool watching the arrow swimming around like a shark. A bloody mess.
2) Spear gun off a dock.
3) SNAAAAAGED. Preferred method in small creeks.
4) 22 semi automatic

Something you can use for Carp that the Brits won't have - Wheaties! Take a modest handful of Wheaties, dunk your fist in the water (in and out don't hold it underwater) the Wheaties will will then be damp and can be molded into a carp sized bait that fits well on a #6 treble, it's my favorite carp bait, the wheaties will "milk" slowly in the water calling in the big rubbermouths from all over, and yes they do fight like Kings, however I don't have a clue as to their taste, anyone tried 'em?

I am such a damn music freak. By admitting that I know the Elvin Bishop song (which is basically a recipe for Carp Cakes, sung) and followed his instructions to the letter pretty much proves that point doesn't it?
They were HORRIBLE!

I spent most of highschool going after carp. My preferred bait was always frozen corn (mostly because I am bad at remembering to bring a can opener). Not using any lead is key here. Also leaving your bail open never hurt or you can be extra slick and use a one of the shimano bait runner reels. Anything so they don't feel resistance and spit the bait. I always preferred using a light line. anything up to 4 is good.

Wheaties.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. A bucking rod and a screaming reel is "beauty" to me, no matter what's on the other end. Except Sea Lions.  In some circles Salmon and Steelhead are "Slimmers" or "Mountain Carp" and are not allowed in the boat. 
Back East eating Carp is common. I've seen them in the Supermarkets in Beverly Hills, Cal. I've eaten them out of cold, clear running creeks in Minn. If taken care of properly and cooked correctly, they were not bad. No, they don't taste like Salmon but then Salmon dosen't taste like Halibut. Probably taste better then Cormorant.

Don't put the corn kernals on the hook. They will spit it out faster than *edit* You need to leave a 1-1/2 - 2" tag end below your hook and thread the corn on the tag line and close it with a bead or sequin to keep the kernals from falling off. Learned that one from Al Linder who was fishing with one of those European Carp professionals. With the bread balls you can put it on the hook because they wont feel the barb until its too late.

I learned the wheaties thing from an old-timer in Texas. He added honey and sugar, and used milk instead of water to soften up the wheaties. Then he made the dough balls, and let them get firm (almost hard) on a cookie rack before fishing with them. He used fine wire hooks. Then he would just go out and catch some big ol' carp and buffalo's.

h2o, you maybe didn't follow the recipe just right...I make carp cakes, and they are good--I actually "stand back and watch'em fight over them carp cakes!" LOL
Seriously, carp are great eating if you clean them right and make sure to take the dark line of (red) meat out of the middle of the fillet. The y bones can be a bother, though-kind of similar to a pike.
Carp isn't any uglier than other fish...C'mon now...I don't catch fish to look at em and oooh and awwww at their pretty faces--
I prefer using corn for bait...
