which is smarter
      #366747 - 02/12/09 08:16 PM

Second_Rod_Stamp and I have been having an ongoing debate as to which of our chosen pets are smarter. I maintain that the dog is much smarter. I have nearly one the argument at this point thanks to Dots creative bartering.

Last night I gave Dot the yolk out of a hard boiled egg and SRS gave cat1(Garfield)a piece of steak. Dot picked up her yolk and took it over to Garfield and gave it to him and he accepted the trade. Dot ate the Steak and then went over and reclaimed the egg yolk. I assume Dots logic was that the steak was of low quality and consited of mostly fat with very little meat. Garfield seem to agree and surrended his illgotten gain.

Another example of the dogs superior intelligence is when I let Dot in the house. The cats, theres 2 of them, come running and are promptly tackled and mauled by Dot. Now what kind of a critter daily runs to a mauling/dog slobber bath. Not a smart one.

So are dogs really smarter than cats?

How many trained service cats have you seen?

How many burglars are deterred by cats?

How many guys have trained their cats to retrieve their ducks etc?

Ever seen the DEA use a drug sniffing cat?

How many cats are trained to find victims in earthquakes, avalanches et???

While playing fetch with Millie in the snow the other day, she couldn't find her ball several times. (getting old) so Buck went over to the spot, stood there with his nose a few inches away and pointed to the ball for Millie.

It appears Millie has her "own" service dog.

To answer your question, look at the forums. You don't see a "CATS" forum do you?

A cat living outdoors can feed itself. A dog will starve unless someone feeds it.

Not around here, Honker-boy. There are plenty of fat cats roaming around the area, and my dog thinks they taste like chicken...

Ever think that cats are not up to making their master happy? I have two that I think are way smarter than my pups but to each its own. I have one primadonna cat who has to have everything her way. If the water is dirty, she looks at me with this guilt, if her food is over two days old, she gives me this stare. Funny thing is, I can read her now and instead of her doing my bidding, I manage to do hers. Think about that one for awhile. LOL, Heck, I could give Moose and Molly an old pair of nasty underwear and they would be happy and just smiling at me. LOL

In the Veterinary field, we have a saying. The Vet decides when an exam is over with on a dog, but on a cat, the cat decides.

I guess I am just enlightened enough to know that cats are too stupid to be trained.

As soon as I see a cat run an agility course we can talk...

Millie is getting old. Buck, whom we thought was as dumb as a box of rocks is quickly becoming Millie's caretaker.

Friday when Mike came home, both dogs were off roaming somewhere. Buck heard the car and came home, knowing it was dinnertime cause his master was here.

Millie didn't come with him. We called her and waited for about 5 minutes and still no Millie. (her hearing is going) Finally, Mike told Buck to go find Millie and he shot out the door. About 3 minutes go by, and here he comes, with Millie right behind him. He was smart enough to know he wasn't going to get fed unless she was here too.

He also won't let us close the front door until she's come inside too. He won't leave her out there by herself.

Uh Gooose, who is smarter, the cat who can hunt for their own food, or the dog who will find his way out of the wilderness and locate another human family to feed them just be being adorable and looking helpless?

Cats do have a sense of humor(or revenge). I caught our 2 cats napping on my bed one day and decided it would be great fun to scare them. I jumpe on the bed and yelled and watched them streak out of the room and try to make the corner on the linoleum. They slid all the way accros the kitchen and crashed into the fridge togeather. I laughed pretty good and thought I had pulled a good one. That night at about 1A.M. I am sound asleep on my back. Something has just punched me in the gut followed by a second punch. seems the cats had taken station on the headboard and launched themselves onto me. This was repeated several times over the next few weeks. I got the message. No more scareing of cats. Fortunately dogs are much more forgiving. Actually I think both are more intelligent than we give them credit for.

You need to get that pup some Valium or ritalin or something ... Maybe just a beer to slow him down

Bake some homemade dog bisquits with pot in em. That should calm him down. Of course, he'll need a LOT of bisquits for munchies too. Viscious circle.

Oops... SHE... Sorry Mike. She just looks so much like Buck!

They are complete opposites in the naughty category though. He's so well behaved it's scary.

Never thought of them as bait, but hard to find a better moving target.

They'll be an endless supply of bait when they open the wolf season in Idaho!
