I just purchased a new puppy last week, he's a 6 day old Australian Shepherd. I'm looking for any advice on bringing the dog along on future fishing trips both boat drift)and bank when he's ready.
Any and all tips (do's and don'ts) are greatly appreciated.

Start early and don't ever stop. Make an area in the boat that belongs to the dog and needs to stay there on command. Always remind those in the boat that the dog will eat plugs, bait, hooks, there lunch, your net, etc.... Keep them away from fish blood especially salmon blood.
Water is a natural switch for a dog to pee so give them a break when you can.
and enjoy moments like this...

I just installed a snap in carpet over the front hatch so she doesn't have to lay on cold aluminum diamond plate. Yes that's a water bowl in the front rope locker...

If you have got him a bed try taking it along with you on some of your first trips to establish "his' area. Probably won't hurt traing them to get on it at home before trying. Buy one of the Richard Wolters books yesterday and start reading.

She stayed on her bed pretty well in a cramped drift boat for a days float. Plobably didn't hurt that it was freezing cold out she could stay warm on her bed!

Start young! Molly has been going with me since she was 3 months old. Once they get by the puppy stage most dogs will settle down while in the boat. The first time I could tell Molly was going to jump out of the boat I was in slow water and let her jump. She was quite shocked when she hit the water. The second time she jumped I made her chase the boat for a while, she hasn't jumped out since.
After a while you'll be able to tell when they have to go to shore for a bathroom break, they start moving around and don't settle down. When I'm getting ready to go fishing Molly is my little shadow. I haven't figured out why she likes it so much. I make her a bed and she sleeps in it all day unless she thinks she get to go to shore to "hunt".
Just for the record molly has never eaten bait, plugs, nets, or hooks, but her name isn't trouble either (gotta love that dog!!)
(SF gotta argue with you on this one) As for the fish blood I always let the dogs get into it first thing. It takes about three days for them to get sick, just give them the pills and you shouldn't have to worry about it again. Talk to your vet about it. For some reason Molly is immune to it. I finally tossed the pills after six years.

Doug, No argument from me on any of the points I mentioned. Trouble has never eating a plug but has attempted grab one loaded with owner hooks. She was intercepted by a size 11 Danner piloted by yours truly. She has stayed away from my net but Denali's pup seamed to enjoy his Frabil. As far as bait Trouble wins. Since a pup she seams to enjoy cured eggs, Nitro seams to be her favorite. She also enjoys cured shrimp but from the aftermath I have to admit what she left on my living room floor was something I didn't enjoy.
As far as blood some dogs seam not to be affected by it. Trouble has been all over it and dead fish and it doesn't seam to affect her. I was just stating keep them away from it because I know of several K9's that it almost killed and this after a hefty vet bill. Just be careful with them around dead fish and watch them on the bank.

Thanks to everyone for the info, always wondered about the salmon blood and will check with the vet on the first visit. He's only 8 days old but should be ready for his first trip down river around Springer time. Haven't gotten the knack of posting pictures just yet, will get on soon.
Here you go, Australian Shepherd 8 days old.

I am looking forward to mine going along. Know she likes the water. Jumped in the hottub with me and proceed to do a few laps followed by a few very stylish dives of the edge. Unfortunately the wife put a kybosh on the dog swimmin. go figure.

I haven't researched it much yet, but I think the parasite is usually in the flesh and guts. Could be wrong but most salmon poisoining dogs we see is usually from eating the carcass after the filet.

Some dogs just need to get out of the puppy stage. I remember your place when we came over for dinner. I didn't think there was anything in the house that would hold that much stuffing;) Trouble is a good dog and a better fishing partner!
I guess we kinda take the salmon poisining around here for granted. We have lots of streams where the dogs can get into fish. If you don't know a dog got into fish, then it might be hard to diagnose. I've had 5 labs and all got it once.
DD the hair plugs up the filters Don't as me how I know.
