I got rid of the boot and crutches yesterday, after ten months, finally! Now I will do my part to help the economy by heading back up to Yakutat for a week in May. Floating the Situk for steelhead four days and hitting the ocean one day for halibut, I gotta make up for all the fishing I missed out on in the last ten months! Bill

We stayed at the Yakutat when we were there, didn't really like it all that much. I've heard Glacier Bear is much better. You'll have to let us know which you think is better. Have a great trip.

We had a great time this year in Yakutat. SH fishing was slow for up there for most. We did fairly well with six landed in a day our worst day and fourteen fish our best day for the two of us floating the river on our own. Those numbers do not count llr's and missed takedowns. Halibut fishing fishing day was six 'butts for four fishermen plus eight rockfish including two Yellow eye. We will not be returning to Yakutat Lodge, driving our own shuttle spotting the boat and trailer adds two hours to the 11 or 12 hour float. Too many hours by the time you shower and eat dinner, I'm too tired to tie much gear. Everthing about the loodge is excellent to very acceptable, but we let them know we would not return if they cannot provide a shuttle for non-guided boats. Overall a wonderful trip! Bill

sweet,, nice catching.. i will be there friday by noon.. how was the river? any dollies in the river yet? last year we stayed at yakutat lodge.. this year we are staying at glacer.. the shuttle makes a long day even longer. last year we shuttled our boat back up after fishing all day and was told to leave it under the bridge which we did.. in the morning someone from glacier took it thinking it was there for them.. honest mistake i guess.. i wanted to rip someones lip off with a big hook or worse... we had to go all the way back, piece together another boat out of leftover beaters and trailer it back up there.. we didn't get much help at the lodge either.. the only decent net we could find was missing the hoop pin. didn't notice it until on the river when it counted.. i lost 2 fish over 20 lbs at the boat in places we couldn't pull over. from the hoop spinning on the handle, while trying to get close enough to hold it and net the fish.. it made me even more mad.. other then that i thought everything was fine.. the food was good. i got to watch a wrestling match in the bar between 2 friends late one night. they cleared out the tables and let them go at it..

GFS, River was low and clear and we caught two dollies a mile or so above the weir. We came home Sat. and a guy we'd talked to all week said he seen large pods of SH on Sat. morning on the lower river. You may hit it just right.
FM, It will be Kokes a few times, then SH after the river opens, no Springers for me this year.

It's a nice little river...

we ended up staying at mooring lodge.. i liked that place and Leo was awesome. he went out of his way a few times to make sure we were taken care of. the rooms were nice, they had everything a fisherman could need staying there and we could use the facility if we needed anything there.. we saved a bunch, he gave us nice vehicles. the boats were glass but in good condition.. no anchor which kind of sucked.. him and his wife shuttled for us.. the river was favorable the first day and a half when it was raining a little. then the sun came out and only left for a few hours a day for the rest of the trip.. the sunset was long and the sky was still rosy after midnight.. it was beautiful.. the fishing was tough with spoons in low clear water.. i think i hooked a total of about 20 steelhead and landed 12 on spoons.. the last few days when the river was super clear i had to work harder.. the last day i fished with a friends extra fly rod for the first time ever and lost 4 fish on it.. my friends did well on the fly rod.. they must have hooked over 60 fish and landed 30 between the 3 of them on fly's.. i must have hooked over 50 dolly's on spoons which kind of made up for the steelhead spoon bite shutting off for me. we had a good bbq dolly dinner and leo gave us a nice slab of frozen king to bbq the next day. we all had a good time, seen some cool stuff, got lots of sun and seen lots of fish migrating up river. chromers too.. some were so close i could have reached out and touched them.. eagles eating stuff, moose walking right down on the river, no bears though.. returned home safe.. what a trip..
