The Vedder River clean up day is being organized by Patrice Drouin of Mission, B.C. The Fraser Valley angling community has come together to help support this event by providing the tools nessessary to get the job done. Freds Custom Tackle and Hubs Sports have both donated over $300.00 in prizes, Gills tackle, Kent Outdoors, Gibbs, Mikes Reel Repair and many other businesses have contributed great prizes so we could really use your support to make our river a better place to fish.

Fraser River
Cutthroat fishing has been very good the past week in many of the popular back channels and tributary confluences. Maria slough has fished well as has Johnson slough and Pump House slough. I think the warmer weather we have had the past few weeks have helped keep the fish active. The forecast for the next few days is calling for more rain and colder temperatures so trout fishing could take a turn for the worse.

Some of the harder to reach tributaries have been excellent fishing for Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char. If you’re planning a trip into our area and would like to experience some great trout fishing just ask us about our backcountry-guided tours.

Sturgeon
The Fraser River mudded up pretty good early in the week from all the rain we had. Local creeks, rivers and sloughs were pumping pure mud into the river for several days making fishing impossible. The past 2 days the river has stabilized and cleared up somewhat so we should be out in full force over the weekend. I would expect fishing to be as good as it was before all the rain but we won’t know until we get out and hit the water.

Vedder
Water conditions January 11 – Upper River – up 4 feet and clearing – 18 to 24 inches of visibility, Lower River – up 4 feet and clearing – 12 to 18 inches of visibility

Wow, I mean WOW, what a rainstorm this week. I have not seen the Vedder rise so quickly in many years. Torrential rains have wreaked havoc throughout the Fraser Valley this week. Rivers were nearly breeching dykes in many communities along the Fraser and sandbagging was implemented in many areas.

The Vedder was pretty much non-fishable most of the week, trees, longs, branches and a tone of muddy water was about the only thing in or near the river. The past 2 days water levels have stabilized and have began to drop. Today we drove the entire river to assess the damages. Some areas of the river have diverted back to old channels but overall it could have been much worse.

We didn’t see any fish but the river is definitely fishable. I would just as soon wait until the water drops a bit more as the edges are very soft and dangerous, the river is raging so be very careful if you go near the water. A personal PFD wouldn’t be a bad idea if you were heading out this weekend. If the rain stays away we should have good conditions by early next week.

Seminar Dates: Hub Sports- January 14,16 & 19 5 spots remaining
Gills tackle- January 8, 10 & 13 Sold Out
January 15,17, & 20 3 spots remaining
Chehalis
High clear water conditions
We walked several areas today to assess conditions for those of you planning to head out this weekend. The water is high, clear and dropping fast. Anglers are reporting some of the best catches of the season so far. Good numbers of steelhead were caught the last two days and I would expect a few more good days over the week or so or until the water gets too low again.

Harrison
The Harrison River like all the other rivers came up 4 or 5 feet. I have not received any reports the past few days but will update this report as soon as I hear something.

Gibbs Nortac announces Kids Story Winners
WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Congratulations to Nathan from Nanaimo! Below is our Winning Story as well as the Runner-Up.
The Winning Story is also in this edition of the BC Outdoors Sport Fishing Magazine.

THE WINNER

"I was awake at 4:30 in the morning. I fell asleep in the truck. When we arrived at the Stamp River, was saw a black bear. I started to get bored of fishing. My dad called me. He gave me his rod. I ran downriver and got my foot stuck between two rocks. When I reeled in the fish, my dad said it was a coho. I took out all the guts. My dad said "I never caught a coho that big." It was 20 pounds and my dad took a picture of me and my coho. I printed it on my T-shirt. I love you, Dad, for teaching me fishing."

THE RUNNER-UP

On our vacation in July, I caught something funny. I was jigging the bottom using a two-ounce Gibbs jigging spoon with my mom, stepdad and Uncle Brodie. I had a little nibble and started reeling it up. After a couple turns of my reel handle the fish felt a lot BIGGER! My mom helped me reel it in. It was a four-pound dogfish. My stepdad was taking it off the hook and started laughing. "Look at this," he said. There was a small flounder on the hook first, then the dogfish ate him and was hooked. My stepdad unhooked both and put them back in the water. That was one of the weird things I ever caught.
