Fraser River
We toured the Fraser today from Dewdney to Agassiz, wow what a beautiful trip. Even though I spend half my life on this river it’s beauty really never seizes to amaze me. Around every corner is another breath taking view of mountains, waterfalls and snow capped peaks.
We have had many reports the past few weeks of good to great trout fishing on the Fraser. The water is gin clear with more than 5 feet of visibility. There was no sign of any fry activity but it won’t be long, 2 or 3 more weeks and we should be into some great fly fishing for Cutthroat.
Some of the harder to reach tributaries have been excellent fishing for Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char. If you’re planning a trip into our area and would like to experience some great trout fishing just ask us about our backcountry-guided tours.
Sturgeon The Fraser River is fishing well once again. We have been averaging good numbers of fish on each outing with some spectacular days. Eulichons season (small bait fish) is not far a way, soon the Fraser will be home to thousands of bait fish eager to be used as bait for some of us diehard sturgeon anglers. If this years run is anything like last year we should be in for some great fishing. March and April our next peak season for sturgeon fishing. This is when some of our best fishing occurs with some of the largest fishing of the year being landed. These fish display spectacular jumps and runs that must be experienced to believe.
Vedder Water conditions February 14 – Upper River – low and clear –, Mid to Lower River – excellent visibility in the morning, coloring up in the afternoon on the warmer days. 24 to 36 inches of visibility The Vedder has been fishing well the entire month of February. Earlier in the week we saw a flury of fish being caught in the lower reaches of the river. Some mornings there were 20 or more fish caught out of 1 or 2 runs in all of about an hour. The water is crystal clear so be careful on how you approach the river especially in the upper river. The upper river has been fishing excellent the past 2 weeks with many fish being landed. My friend and STS Guide Greg has been slaying them in his secret hole, I would tell you where but then I would have to move out of town.
The next 8 weeks will prove to be the best fishing of the season, if you haven’t hooked up on a steelhead yet keep trying as persistence will pay off.
Steelhead Seminar We have completed our steelhead seminars for this season, I would like to thank all those people who attended and wish them the best of luck.
Last Chance for this season We have had some interest for another steelhead seminar, we will be taking names over the next week or so. If we have enough angler interest we will set dates for one more seminar.
Chehalis Anglers are reporting low clear conditions with some fair catches of steelhead this week. Low clear water will plague this river until we get warmer weather and heavy rains. Light leader and small presentations will be the order of the day until then.
Harrison The Harrison has been fishing well the past week or so. Good numbers of Cutthroat are spread throughout the river just waiting for the fry to emerge. It won’t be long before this river heats up so keep an eye out on the shoreline for actively feeding fish. Pink and Chum salmon fry will be the first to show so make sure you have a good variety of sizes and colors in tie down minnows or epoxy minnows on hand. I also like using flash flies as they often take the larger fish in the river.
