Took the last few days off from pulling plugs on the cowlitz to go up a do a little fly fishing on the vedder. Between my better half and me we hooked up with 72 steelhead in three days it was just plain nuts. I just wanted to get away from the everyday stress of having to produce fish for clients everyday and just plain dam wore myself out it was alot of fun. alot of them had some colar but still everyone of them put up a tussle.

That must be a typo right 72 steelhead. Vedder had some nice fly water the winter weekend I fished in 1986. Cold february weekend.

Gotta love the Vedder. Early last month we got kings, silvers, pinks, chums, and steelies out of the same drift and on the same gear.

i think you're having some problems with indentifying fish because there's absolutely no way you caught or hooked 72 steelhead in three days.

Wow, I somehow missed this thread. Plugs, you're being called out. Put up or retract. If you hit that many, you'd be legend in the local area. Funny how my Dad, who fishes the Vedder nearly every day when it's open and fishable for the last 20 yrs hasn't mentioned any new legend...

I doubt if I ever even seen more than a 20 fish school of steelhead. That was on the greatest morning of steelhead fly fishing career to date. Surrounded by fresh steelhead and they were big all 10 lbs plus with some up to high teens.
What a glorious morning that was on St Patricks day 17 years ago in a snow storm and all alone.
72 is a lot of anything especially steelhead.

Well, there's always the possibility he found that great spot just inside the fence at the hatchery....

Ok this was over 3 days 2 people and includes hooking so lets break this down.
24 fish a day x3 days
Thats 12 fish hooked apiece over a 3 day period. On a pod of fish this is very possible... but of course I am not familiar with the vedder at the time of year. Plugs does guide for a living so he knows how to fish. With a 10% bragging adjustment its very possible. But what do I know

Calling a fellow fisherman a liar (or at least suggesting he stretched the truth) is a very serious charge. I am taking his report hook line and sinker.

I guess its possible. I have caught 25 fish in one day on the Rogue if you count steelhead, salmon and trout, but never 25 adult steelhead in one day. I think 9 adult steelhead in one day might be my record, but what happens to me is 3 or 4 fishless days, and then wham! 6 big fish in one outing. I think if I caught 72 in 3 days I'd pass out ...

Well, like I said, the Vedder isn't long, nor is the numbers of anglers ever low. If anyone was hitting them like that, it would become known in the local shops, amongst the guides, and regulars. Again, no new legends that I've heard of. I will probably be up there sometime next week to ask...

Better choice is to email plugs and find out where he was at so you could plan a trip to THAT spot this coming april Then be sure to invite me along

Well, it can happen (that many fish). But I don't know the Vedder. I know we've had #'s similar to that back in the Glory days Plunking the Puyallup. Not quite 72, but pretty damned close (back then we were egg hunting, so released most of the bucks). We had some big digit days, but those were on bait and SnG's. Not swinging the fly. Don't think I've cracked the double digit mark on swung flies for steelhead (salmon, yes). But, would be about right for 2 people in 3 days. Especially if they found a stacked up pool of fish. Like Marty said, it's the #'s. They do add up, but I don't know all the variables to call foul. Is possible.

Sounds like a big crock of sh#t to me!This time of year I doubt there would be 72 steelhead in the entire Chilliwack/Vedder system.(and none of them should have any colour! )I have heard rumours of the very odd one being caught, but thats it.They don't show up in any real numbers until around the end of December.Numbers peak from Feb.-Apr. Last years Boxing Day derby had 367 anglers with a grand total of SEVEN (7) fish weighed in! This is locals using flies, gear and bait combined. And I'm supposed to believe some out of area dude with his wife caught 72 steelhead in three days on the fly in a river that has JUST come back into shape after a hundred year flood,a month BEFORE steelhead season starts??????? What's his phone-#? I'm sure all the local guide/outfitters will want to make him an offer.

Wait a minute... I just noticed that his post was 4/4/02.
Read it carefully, note the first line
Quote:
Took the last few days ...to go up a do a little fly fishing on the vedder. ...we hooked up with 72 steelhead in three days ...
How did the post date escape our notice? (no, not the fact that it's so old, but the actual date itself)
Quote:
... in three days...
He posted on April 4th. Work with me here. If he fished 3 days before the 4th, and then drove home to post... That would make one of those fishing days possibly.... C'mon, you can do it. This isn't like asking what else floats on water besides witches...(a duck).
APRIL 1 - April Fools' Day We've been had.
It's funny how BC guys (and a former BC resident) who have logged quite a lot of time on the Vedder, are having a hard time believing the story.

Thanx for the kick in the head crump!I never noticed the post date. How did an old post get to the top of the list? I assumed it was current. Are the mods playing tricks on us? The post being in April makes a world of difference. In April an experienced pair of stealhead fly-fishers might be able to post those #s on the Vedder, but it still sounds higher to me than local experts could do.

We'll blame it on Hal (black ghost). He was probably looking at archives and brought it back up. You're forgiven Hal.
Yup, probably an april fools joke. Like my "I'm selling all my okies off for $50, all 5,000 of them". Man, does that get emails, until they scroll to bottom of ad and see "April Fools, just kidding".

Yes your right I did not notice the date on this one. Its a hoax no one could hook 72 steelhead in 3 days unless maybe you are on the lower rogue for the half pounder run. I have heard from multiple reliable sources you can have 20-30 hook up days there when you hit the peak of the run but they are all little guys under 18 inches. That would be a lot of fun on light tackle for sure and dry flys would be pure heaven for me.

This post wasn't a typo, a joke or a fish tale and I've been a guide for more than 20 years and no how to identify dam fish If you can't take your fishen partner to the vedder the last week of march and the 2 of you fish from daylight to dark and not hook a dozen plus fish a day apiece you should find another hobby. Marty I don't take being insulted and called a liar to well I won't be back here to post again. Thanks Marty you've been great. Keep up the good work nobody on the nets board even comes close to your layout. cya man.

Well, it's just 'odd' that those on this board who fishes that river regularly seem to have difficulty believing the claim. And in talking this last wknd with one of the oldest shops in the area, no one else believed it.

Hmmm, there was some nice fly water on the Vedder maybe I should think about putting it back on my BC to do list.
I know it is known for having a lot of hatchery and some wild steelhead and salmon. Just that hooking 20 steelhead a day only happens once in a while in my experience. To have multiple days of it in a row anywheres is a low probability.
Sorry if we offended you Plugs just that is definitely in the low probability area of steelheading achievements. But if you are a guide on the river almost every day obviously your success factor is higher than us non guides thats for sure.
