Fraser Valley report for the week of April 2 /2002
Fraser River Cutthroat fishing was a bit slow last weekend. Our fly guides faired well but they really had to cover a lot of water to find fish. These fish seem to move around quite a bit, you need to cover a substantial amount of water in order to be successful. Most productive areas have been between Chilliwack and Hope along the shallow gravel bars where Pink salmon spawned in the fall. The fishing has really been spotty, one day the bite is on the next day you can’t find them. This inconsistent weather is helping much, once we get more stable weather fishing should improve.
Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing continues to be very good throughout the Fraser River. Anglers have reported some very large catches of fish up to 9 feet. Rumors have it that a 11 foot sturgeon was caught this past week, our largest was just over 7 feet. This great fishing should continue through the month of April. If you’ve never tried sturgeon fishing, April is a great month with a good chance at hooking into some of those larger prehistoric fish.
Vedder Steelhead fishing continues to be very good throughout the river. Water conditions are very good in the upper and lower river with the mid river coloring up a bit on the warmer afternoons. There is only 3 weeks left in the steelhead season for gear fisherman then the river becomes fly only from the Vedder Crossing down. This river will be completely closed during the month of June to allow steelhead to spawn in peace. The river will open once again on the first of July for the beginning of the spring Chinook fishery. Anglers are already getting geared up for the upcoming spring fishery looking to stock up on salmon and trout gear. If your looking to save some money Hub Sports and Babcock fly and tackle are having their annual blowout sale this weekend.
Chehalis The Chehalis River is still too low to be very productive. Anglers are reporting the occasional fish but overall fishing has been very poor. Until we get some rain this river will continue to produce poor results. Be sure to get an updated report from your local tackle store if you plan on fishing this river.
Harrison The cold weather this past week really put a damper on fishing. We were just getting into some great fishing when suddenly the tap was turned off. Anglers from some of the local fly clubs were out in force on Harrison River with very little to show for their efforts. Harrison Lake was definitely the better fishery of the two over the last week. I would suggest trying some beach fishing from the east side of the lake. There are several creeks that often produce good results at this time of year. Be sure to check our website for updated reports and articles.
