Fraser Valley Report for May 1 /2002
      #36942 - 05/01/02 04:48 PM

Fraser Valley report for the week of May 1 /2002

Fraser River
Trout/salmon
The Fraser River opened May 1st for retention for Chinook salmon. You may retain 1 Chinook over 50 cm and 3 under. The chances of catching Chinook under 50 cm are slim to none so think big a go for the large ones. Success will depend highly on water conditions, if the visibility is more than 12 inches you have a very good chance if it’s under then fish creek mouths where Chinook will hold and rest.
Mid to late June offer some of the best action for early Chinook. Although the action can be fierce it also is one of the more inconsistent fisheries in the valley. We like to plunk or bar fish early morning, fish creek mouths during late morning or on the incoming tide then go for a few Sturgeons late in the day. This makes for a great trip with some variety but if the Chinook fishing is hot, stick with your guns and wait it out on the bars, good things come to those who wait.

Sturgeon
Sturgeon fishing has been sporadic at best. One day your catching lots the next day you have to cover 5 miles of water just to find a few. Usually the sturgeon fishing is more consistent than this during April. This year the Eulachons have not spent much time in the upper river, in fact we have been netting the Mission area with very poor results. The last few days of April we have had much better success catching good numbers of small and medium sized sturgeon. Most of these fish were stuffed full of Eulachons so it looks as though they are beginning to reach the upper river area. Although this didn’t help us much in April, it could extend the sturgeon fishery well into May. The last trip out a few days ago resulted in one of our best days of the month with 19 sturgeon landed which 4 of them were over 5 feet so things are looking up.

Vedder

The Vedder continues to produce good results. The river is now fly only below Vedder crossing and closed to all fishing above. The river will re-open once again on July 1st for the early Chinook fishery. The fly-fishing has been very good this past week. One of our fly guides managed 6 steelhead and 1 Chinook salmon on the fly in just 2 days of fishing. Best flies have been large woolly buggers and egg suck’n leech patterns. Fishing Hi D sink tip lines with a down stream swing has been the best presentation.

Is it worth the effort? Absolutely. As long as the weather doesn’t get too warm, the river should stay in good shape for the best part of May. Once the river rises, it may get a bit difficult to fish but lets keep our fingers crossed. Fishing the past few weeks has been excellent for both fly and gear fishers. Now that the river is fly only, this would be a great time to get out and try your luck for that trophy steelhead on the fly.
We will continue to offer guided steelhead fishing on the fly until water conditions deteriorate.

Chehalis
The Chehalis River is now closed to all fishing below main logging road bridge 2.4 km below the lake. Anglers can expect some fair fishing for summer run steelhead once the river re-opens on June 1st. Until then this river will remain closed to all fishing.

Harrison
The Harrison River fished well the past few days. Although we faired well most anglers find this river frustrating. Cutthroat trout tend to move around quite a bit during the fry migration. Anglers must cover plenty of water searching shoreline and structure for feeding fish. Best flies have been smaller fry patterns, tied down minnows and epoxy minnows. We have also faired well with 3/8 silver plated croc spoons. Remember, all wild trout must be released unharmed so please take care when handling any fish that is going to be released.

Remember to conserve your catch
Tight Lines and we will see you on the water
