Fraser Valley report for the week of May 21 /2002
New Fly casting seminar dates: We have had a great response and would like to thank all participants. We have decided to offer two more classes.
Abbotsford – June 16, 23 & 30 Langley - June 16, 23 & July 7
Fraser River Salmon The Fraser River has risen several feet since our last report. Debris floating down the river has been heavy at times but has lightened up a bit the past few days. Anglers are reporting the occasional Chinook salmon but you need a lot of luck and patience to catch these elusive fish. Creek mouths continue to produce best results with anglers casting and trolling lures. Test fishery results show good numbers of fish migrating up the Fraser. Peak run timing’s for the early summer run is mid June to early July. Hopefully the freshet will be done by then and river conditions will favor anglers. Until then, creek mouth fishing will continue to be your best option. If your looking for maps or information on access to the Fraser, there is a book that was recently published called Fishing Fever (Fishing Mission to Hope) by Eileen McGuire. You should be able to find it in your local tackle or bookstore.

Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing was fair to good this past week depending on whom you talk to. On Saturday we fished 6 hours, landed 5 fish with 3 of them over 4 feet and 1 over 5 feet. I would say that is very good fishing but we also heard of several boats that didn’t do well. This time of year fishing is always a bit inconsistent so it would be expected that not everyone did well. Anglers should expect to work hard for their fish and cover lots of water during the day. Those anglers who do can usually catch a few even during slow periods. Good baits would to try would include; Eulachons, Lamprey, Ditch eels and Dew worms.
Vedder This last week the river has risen several feet and visibility is poor. There is only 8 days left before this river closes entirely for the month of June. I wouldn’t expect water conditions to improve much between now and then so the Steelhead season for the Vedder is pretty much over. This river will re-open July 1st for the early run of Chinook salmon. I will keep you posted on water conditions, as we get closer to opening day.
Harrison The Harrison River is high and rising, water clarity is good and should remain clear throughout freshet. We spent the entire weekend teaching fly-fishing on the Harrison River. Not much to report but we did managed to catch a few nice Cutthroat. Overall fishing has been slow but this would be expected as the water levels continue to rise. Trout fishing will continue to be slow until mid summer when the salmon begin to arrive. The Harrison River has some world-class salmon runs but we won’t see that until mid tom late summer.
Local Lakes Local lakes continue to produce some good results for small to medium sized trout. Many of these lakes are stocked so catching these fish can be quite easy. Kids are our future and fishing is great for kids. Lasting memories of fishing with Dad are priceless, so take a few hours and take a kid fishing. If your son or daughter catches a fish, have them write their story and enter into Gibbs Kids story contest. This contest runs year round with winners being announced ever few months. You can win $50.00 worth of tackle and other great prizes. All you need to do is write a short 100-word story of your day fishing. You can send your story to: Gibbs/Nortac 7455 Conway Ave, Burnaby, B.C. V5E 2P7 or fill out the form on-line at www.gibbsfishing.com
Interior lakes are fishing very well right now. If you’re heading out of town or planning a day trip, now would be a good time. Logan Lake, Tunkwa, Leighton, Paul, Courtney, Corbett are all within reach of a day trip. Many others like Knouff, Community and Badger are all good producers but are a bit far for a day trip but well worth an overnight trip. All these lakes are fishing well and should continue to until the warmer Merritt/Kamloops weather hits.
