Fraser River
Salmon fishing is getting Hot!
The Last week has been interesting to say the least. Salmon fishing was very good up until last Sunday, and then the water began to rise once again. Fortunately it only came up 6 inches then stabilized. By Wednesday the river had stabilized and now is beginning to drop once again. During those few days from Sunday – Wednesday, the fishing was tough. The occasional fish was caught but nothing like the week prior. Yesterday (Thursday the 18th) was HOT fishing. We hooked 5 Chinook; our biggest was 25.5 lbs. Our friend’s Jerry and Bill from Coast to Coast Hardware in Bellingham hooked and landed a 30.5 lb chromer. Many other large fish were hooked but few were landed. This great fishing will only get better as the days and weeks go by. Sockeye numbers are beginning to increase so hopefully by the end of the month we will have an opening for retention.

Tip of the week.
When bottom bouncing the Fraser for Chinook or Sockeye, try shortening your leader to put more fish on the beach. Long leaders can hook you more fish but most of then get off because you can’t control the fish. I watched one group of angler’s hook 5 Chinook landed 0, we hooked 5 landed 4. If your using a softer rod, remember that the rod will bend giving the fish more distance from the net. Keep your leader short so that you can net the fish out in the boat.

Sturgeon
Sturgeon fishing has been fairly slow overall. On average we are hooking 2 to 3 fish per trip but those are well-deserved fish. Covering lots of water is the key, don’t spend too much time in each area and try to mix up your baits. Once the sockeye get in the river, sturgeon fishing should pickup. Many of our guests choose to fish both salmon and sturgeon on the same trip. This is a great way to experience some of the best fishing in North America, salmon in the morning, sturgeon in the afternoon.

November Sturgeon Special

November/ December is two of the best months to fish for sturgeon. This is when we catch some of the biggest fish of the year. The average size increases to many fish over 6-7 feet with good chances at hooking into that trophy fish of a lifetime. We are offering a sturgeon special for the month of November/December. Book at guided trip for 3 persons and bring the 4th person for free or receive a FREE STS Sturgeon ball cap for each person in your party. This special is good until December 31/2002; we also offer gift certificates that can be used as Christmas gifts for that special Husband or Dad.

Vedder
The Vedder river is high but dropping fast. The river is chalked full of Sockeye heading up to Chilliwack Lake and there a good numbers of Chinook in the river. One of our guides went out for a few hours last night and hooked 5 Sockeye using die Krill fished under a float, same method used for steelhead. There are fish rolling and jumping all over the river but few anglers have mastered catching them. Leave the bottom bouncing to the Fraser and try using Krill die with double hot red Pro Cure. This is the same method we have been using on the Harrison for the past 4 years. Sockeye do bite, you just need to give them a chance.

Chehalis River
The Chehalis River is low and clear. Anglers are reporting good fishing for summer run Steelhead in the lower river at first light. Once the sun is up these fish become spooky and difficult to catch. There is good number of Chinook in the river but it’s much the same, a few fished hooked at first light, then tough fishing the rest of the day.

Harrison
Harrison River is continuing to drop at a slow rate. We have not seen any schools of sockeye yet but it won’t be long. We had one boat fishing for trout a few days ago with limited success. Once the sockeye get in the trout fishing should improve. I will keep you up to date on the progress of this river.

November fly fishing for salmon seminar

Once again we will be offering our annual fly-fishing for salmon seminar. This is a one-day on the river seminar where you will learn how to fish for salmon on the fly. We will spend a few hours teaching you about catching salmon on the fly, then you will have an opportunity to fish and catch Coho and Chum salmon. We will be keeping our groups small so seating is limited. We will run our river jet boats up the Harrison River to some of the best fly water in the province. Our one-day seminar will be held during the week of November 12- 17 with weekday and weekend seminars. The cost is $135.00 per person and includes a STS ball cap.
Please call or e-mail to pre-register.
