Fraser River Sockeye opening for Sport anglers
Recreational: sockeye retention opportunities have been announced for tidal water fisheries including Areas 11 to 29 seaward of the mouth of the Fraser River. In addition, the Fraser River will open to the retention of sockeye commencing Friday, August 2. For additional details for the fisheries, please consult: FN0541
The Fraser River Panel will meet again Friday, August 2 to review the review the progress of the Fraser River sockeye returns and to consider fishing opportunities. Salmon fishing getting hotter The last two days we have been seeing good numbers of sockeye salmon migrating up the Fraser. Yesterday ( Tuesday) was one of our better days for both Chinook and Sockeye. We landed 4 Chinook; largest was 32 lbs caught by Jonathan Reese Davis of Britain. We also managed to land good numbers of sockeye so anglers should expect some fair fishing this weekend.
Sturgeon Sturgeon fishing has been slow for the most part. The upper river near Chilliwack / Agassiz has seen quite a bit of pressure this past week. Most fish have been content to just pick up and drop the bait, never really getting a good bite. The lower river between Chilliwack and Mission has been a bit more productive but overall it’s still tough fishing. Our top sturgeon guide this week has faired well with the best day being Tuesday with 11 sturgeons, largest was just under 6 feet. Expect sturgeon fishing to pick up once we see more sockeye enter the river. November is just about full, so if you’re planning to fish sturgeon with us during prime time, book soon to ensure you get a date. Trout Fishing Fishing for trout has been fair this week for the most part but should continue to improve as days go by. Our guest from Memphis Tennessee managed to catch a beautiful Bull Trout and a large Sockeye on the fly. Both these fish were caught on one of our wilderness adventures. Trout are just beginning to stage behind the pawning sockeye making for some incredible fly-fishing opportunities. For more information on our wilderness adeventures, please call or see this link. http://www.guidebc.com/accommodation_packages/accomm_wildernessriver.asp
Vedder The Vedder/Chilliwack is in excellent shape. Water flows are moderate with good visibility. This week has been fair to good in the lower river and a bit slower than last week in the upper river. Anglers can expect Chinook fishing to drop off soon but it won’t be long before Coho are in the river so don’t give up quite yet. Most years we begin to see Coho in the Vedder system by mid to late August. I prefer to fish the lower canal area with bait at first light. These fish will hold in the lower river at night so they make easy targets first thing in the morning. The bite is usually over by 9 am so be sure to get there early.
Chehalis River Same as last week The Chehalis River is gin clear and low. This river fishes best at first light until late morning then your pretty much wasting your time. Try fishing it again late evening when the light is low again. Some summer steelhead are still being caught but the majority of fish are now up in the mid to upper canyon. Try using small roe bags or small wool ties that imitate salmon eggs. We have always done well with Jensen eggs or similar plastic artificial.
Harrison Harrison River is still quite high but is dropping at a good rate along with the Fraser. Trout fishing has been slow overall with the occasional cutthroat being caught on fly and lure. Don’t expect much from this river until mid September when the sockeye are in the river in good numbers.
Harrison Lake has fished well this past week with one angler reporting a large 22-inch cutthroat being caught while trolling a black flat fish near 20 mile Bay. Harrison Lake is large and can be very dangerous due to high winds. If you plan on fishing Harrison Lake, be sure to check the weather channel before you go. If the wind begins to pick up in the early afternoon, be prepared to pull up and leave. http://www.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca

November/ December is two of the best months to fish for sturgeon. This is when we catch some of the biggest fish of the year. Book at guided trip for 3 persons and bring the 4th person for free or receive a FREE STS Sturgeon ball cap for each person in your party. This special is good until December 31/2002; we also offer gift certificates that can be used as Christmas gifts for that special Husband or Dad.
November fly fishing for salmon seminar
Once again we will be offering our annual fly-fishing for salmon seminar. This is a one-day on the river seminar where you will learn how to fish for salmon on the fly. We will spend a few hours teaching you about catching salmon on the fly, then you will have an opportunity to fish and catch Coho and Chum salmon. We will be keeping our groups small so seating is limited. We will run our river jet boats up the Harrison River to some of the best fly water in the province. Our one-day seminar will be held during the week of November 12- 17 with weekday and weekend seminars. The cost is $135.00 per person and includes a STS ball cap. Please call or e-mail to pre-register.
