Fraser Valley Report for August 27 /2002
      #36954 - 08/27/02 05:59 PM

Fraser Valley report for the week of August 27 /2002

Fraser River

Salmon fishing on the Fraser continues to be very good. We have been fishing for Chinook Jacks, Adult Chinook, Cutthroat Trout and Sturgeon. Chinook salmon average between 12- 25 lbs with the occasional fish over 25 lbs. The Jacks average 12 to 20 inches but offer a great sport for light tackle. The best way to target Jack’s or Adult Chinook is bar fishing with #2 spin n glo’s with cured salmon roe attached to the hook. These rigs are simple to make or you can purchase them pre-made at most tackle stores. If you would like to read more about bar fishing, we have several article’s on our website on how, where and when to catch salmon using this method.

Sturgeon
Sturgeon fishing has been fair to good for sturgeon between 3 to 5 feet with the occasional fish over 5 feet. Our biggest fish this week was measured just under 8 feet caught by the Mayberry Family of Utah while fishing with STS Guide Tom Pearce. Sturgeon fishing will continue to improve over the next few months with peak fishing continuing well into November.
Vedder River
Salmon fishing on the Vedder remains slow for the most part. Some anglers have reported catching early Coho in the lower river with Sunday being the best day last week. Targeting Coho headed for the Vedder this early in the season is best near the confluence of the Sumas Canal and the Fraser River. Trolling and Casting lures is the preferred method. Some of the more productive lures used by local anglers are the Gibbs Croc, Gibbs Koho spoon and the Gibbs Tee Spoon. The Tee Spoon is more suitable for trolling while the Koho and Croc can do both. Favorite colors vary from angler to angler. We recommend a selection of colors with red, white, silver and brass. Our best producing lures is the Gibbs hammered brass/ red fire strip and the hammered silver plated red/fire strip.

Harrison
Trout fishing continues to be very good both in the Fraser Valley and surrounding area. The Harrison River has fished well this past week for Cutthroat to 18 inches. Our top fly guide Erik Skanning has been doing very well late in the evening catching Cutthroat between 12 and 18 inches. Best fly patterns have been large stickleback imitations and searching patterns such as woolly buggers and flash patterns. We can expect trout fishing to improve over the next few months while salmon are abundant and sticklebacks remain in the river.

Chehalis River

The Chehalis River is difficult to fish during the hot summer weeks. No rain in the forecast makes this river a poor choice for anglers looking for some good action. The canyon area can be productive for those who like an adventure and can stand the physical challenge of hiking the steep canyon trails. Summer Run Steelhead can be found in some of the higher up pools while early returning Coho can be caught in the lower pools. If you decide to challenge yourself by hiking into the canyon, be smart, use the buddy system. Be sure to tell someone where you’re going and approximate time you will return.

If your looking for a great getaway for the long weekend, we still have a few rooms and cabins available at the Pitt River Lodge. Call us at 1-800-665-6206
