Fraser Valley Report for November 4 /2002
      #36955 - 11/04/02 05:32 AM

Fraser Valley report for the week of November 4 /2002

Fraser River

The Fraser River has fished well this week for both salmon and sturgeon. Good numbers of fresh Coho and Chum are entering the river each day with every high tide. We have faired well using several methods. Fly-fishing, spoon fishing and bar fishing have all produced good results.

Bar fishing is best 2 hours before and after high tide, especially in the lower river. If you’re fishing the Chilliwack area above Queens Bar, fishing has been good all day using spoons, flys or bar fishing.

Low water is becoming a great concern in the entire Fraser Valley region. Most tributary rivers are extremely low; so much that salmon cannot enter the river to spawn. Lower river tributaries such as the Dewdney / Norish are drying up in low tide. Salmon are entering the river in high tide then going back out on the out flow. Anglers are doing well at the mouth and trolling lures in the slough on the high tide.

Sturgeon
Sturgeon fishing is red hot to say the least. Every trip has produced good numbers of fish between 4 – 7 feet with the odd fish over 8 feet. Our best days have come when we can fish the tides but even on poor tide days we have faired well. Our largest fish this week was caught by local resident Cameron Skulitz of Mission while on his surprise 9th birthday party. Cam managed to land one of largest fish this fall with help from his dad Pete. This sturgeon measured over 9 feet total length and weighed approx 300lbs. Way to go Cam, pictures should be up in a few days.

Dewdney / Stave

The Stave is full of chum and some coho. Shore anglers are best to fish near the Dam on either side of the river while those with boats can fish the lower canal area. The lower canal area is where the incoming tide each day brings in fresh chum and coho. This is where you want to target the salmon on an incoming or high tide.

The Dewdney is in desperate need of rain. Anglers are catching good numbers of coho near the Fraser confluence and in the Fraser itself. Again fishing the tides is best as there is no water on a low tide. Launching a larger boat is all most impossible unless you launch at high tide. Smaller car toppers are fine, as you don’t need much water to get them off the trailer or car.

Vedder River

The Vedder River like most other tributary rivers in the area is in need of rain. Salmon are having trouble getting up into the river, as there is no water in the lower canal area. Each day small numbers of fresh fish enter the river but not enough to make it worth your while. The mid and upper river area is chalked full of Chum, Coho and spawned out Chinook. If we get some rain we might get a few more weeks of good fishing, if not I think this river has seen it’s best days for this season.

Chehalis River

The Chehalis River is in desperate need of water. I have never seen the water so low. Some areas of the main river channel are actually dried up with water flow going under ground. This river should be chalked full of coho and chum at this time of year. All of the salmon are holding up in the Harrison and Fraser waiting for rains to come. This river is near disaster stage if we don’t get some rain. There are 10”s of thousands of salmon waiting to spawn in the river but unless we get some rain, these fish will end up spawning in the Harrison or just dieing before getting to their home waters.

Harrison River
The Harrison River is chalked full of Chum and Coho. This river has fished well for the past month offering some of the best fishing this river has every seen. With all the Chehalis Coho and Chum holding in the Harrison it’s not that difficult to find a few fish willing to bite. If you’re willing to put in the time you will be rewarded with some great fishing. Coho are spread out throughout the river holding anywhere there is water over 3 feet. Chum are littered everywhere so just casting a line usually results in a hook up. Fishing will remain this way until we get rain or until the salmon season is over

Trout and Coho fly-fishing
Fly - fishing for salmon has been just short of incredible. Now’s the time to get out as the season has only a few weeks remaining. We should see good fishing last well into late November and maybe even December but as we all know the weather usually becomes a bit cold for most. We still have some dates available.
