Critter question...
      #376201 - 05/09/09 05:42 PM

Caveman says we have a bear visiting the property. The only sign he's seen is a big log (full of bugs) that's being torn to shreds by something. I don't see any claw marks though?

What else could it be?

It is definitely a Pacific Northwest Great Spotted Hoary Fruit Bat. Due to the lack of fruit this time of year they commonly bust logs up and eat the grubs.

Could also be opossum or raccoons. Best bet is a bear. Get a trail cam and find out... If it is a fruit bat, you owe me one.

Hmm... I do have a trail cam, but we've been using it for security when we go away for a few days.

Aunty, sprinkle a little molasses on that log. if it's a bear he'll eat the whole thing.

I had a bear bait in 1988 that consisted of a huge punky Ponerosa(about 5 feet thick), and meat scraps from the local grocery. Over the span of the season, the bears ate the whole log, because I doused it with molasses 3 times a week. Good fiber for the bruins. Gotta have fiber with your meat, right?
