Reef Study Puget Sound
      #378692 - 06/04/09 02:58 PM

I just read that some guy named Bear Holmes is going to be on 710 ESPN The Outdoor Line radio show 6-8:30 this Saturday morning talking about artificial reefs in Puget Sound.

As soon as they take the gag off. Think best science available, rockfish, lingcod and the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

Better science than that; we might even use scientists.

Not too many and please don't locate it somewhere just because that's where the dive community wants it.Can't wait to here the details. Looks like the kelp restoration grant my contacts put in for isn't going to make the cut. Shame since while rocky reef is great the central Sound also needs it's kelp stands restored for juvenile rockfish habitat.

That's because you didn't include plans to use an Autonomous Modular Optical Underwater Robot. You are always too low tech and budget minded, not to mention you apparently won't take advantage of nepotism.

Gooose is right on about the kelp and rockfish. There used to be a long line of bull kelp in the Narrows and that produced rock fish and Lings. The Herring spawn in kelp, I think. Kings love kelp lines.

For the uninformed, what happened to the sounds Kelp Beds? Harvest? Removed for Navigation? Something else?

Side Note: Don’t juvenile salmonoids use kelp beds for salt water rearing?

Kelp depends upon photosynthesis inorder to survive. That requires that sun light be able to penetrate the water to the plant. Due to increased input of nutrients from human activities into Puget Sound phytoplankton blooms have increased to the point where light penetration isn't occurring sufficiently for kelp to live. Eel grass has the same issue. Harvest and removal for navigation has had little if any effect. Nor did the commercial draggers destroy it.

Kelp is critical habitat for salmonids and a host of other marine life.

Given the time constraints, you did a darn good job Bear. I noticed that some of those folks supporting the concept weren't mentioned, not that it really matters a lot.

I'm still glad that I had the opportunity to ask my questions in a chapter meeting, rather than having to Twitter it. I don't Twitter.

Will you be speaking at all the PS chapters? I bet Chuck and the Kitsap chapter will want to have you!

Thanks Aunty. The time FLEW by. We had sort of a plan but didn't stick to it. Rob and I talked after the show and both said we need more time to get out the facts. As far as who supports and who doesn't, we literally have the who’s who of fish management and science involved but some folks didn't want their name used on the radio.

For Gooose and others, the plan is way more defined than came out this morning. The goal is to examine ways to conserve and restore specific groundfish stocks. One way is using the best science available and working with NMFS, WDFW and others to develop a scientific research plan. The goal of the proposed "project" is to build and operate artificial reefs that facilitate research, conservation, education and (at some point in the future) recreational fishing and diving.

The goal for the "research" is to determine how to maximize fish abundance and diversity on artificial reefs.

We propose the use of artificial reefs so we can have two with the same properties in a set, one for control. The existing proposal is for 6 sets of 2 for a total of 12 reefs 100’ long and 8-15’ tall. The research outline also proposes to study the effects of supplementing (small scale) artificial reefs with hatchery fish.

This is presently proposed to be a six year study. We are at year zero; year one starts with permitting. The next step is for WDFW and NMFS to work together with others to identify proposed sites, survey those sites and, at the same time, work on the actual reef design. We anticipate that will take about a year. While every person I have contacted is supportive, that doesn’t necessarily mean their agency is supportive. And there are also several other state and federal agencies and sovereign nations involved in the process, any one of which can put a stick in the spokes. In addition, as I stated this morning, every square inch of Puget Sound is important to someone for some reason.

We know for a fact that simply dumping mass quantities of concrete on the bottom will result in that structure being occupied by numerous species of marine life. That’s not scientific or research and wouldn’t pass muster with WDFW or most other permitting agencies.

Goose, I would be happy to share a draft of the research outline for your review and comment.

We would also like to explore what might be done to restore near shore habitat like kelp and eelgrass. In addition we realize removing derelict gear will restore existing habitat and result in immediate improvement. Right now we are nowhere on those issues.

Bear I sure would like to see a copy of the proposal. If there is real interest I can provide an introduction to the proponents for kelp restoration. The project design is already to go but lacking grant funding. Sure wish I had been able to listen but I was busy creating a new oyster bed this morning.
