Fisrt time on Steelheader.com.. Planning on a father/sons Halibut trip to Sekiu on the weekend of June 12. Just checking on any information (tackle, bait, locations, techniques, etc.) for fishing the area.
We are looking forward to being in the area of Sekiu and trying of luck on some Halibut.
Thanks for reading this post and appreciate any information you may have.

My buddy and I are thinking about going over to Sekiu this week. Go over on Wed and fish until Sun. If we go we will stay at the Coho Resort. My buddy lives in Oregon, we're taking my boat and his camper. NR Seahawk, blue trim, red Dodge PU and camper. Look us up. The places to fish are no secret, to the west off of Kadaka Point, be careful not to go too far west, past the bridge over the Sekiu river, thats Area 4. Also straight out from the middle of Clallam Bay is OK.
Between 300 and 400 feet. Big spreader bar, prob 32 oz of weight, horse herring, wire leader. There are a lot of dogfish, thus wire leader, you just have to fight through them. Sometimes there are fish shallower, and you can use less lead, just move around. If you are really troubled by dogfish, move, they tend to run in schools.
I've tried jigs of various kinds to cut down on the doggies, but the Butts over there seem to prefer meat.
The fish checker report last week showed 50% success rate. A new fish checker report will be posted on Monday. Click on Peninsula.

Good luck.

Pretty big. Penn Senator reel, heavy Halibut rod, I think my mainline is 80 pd super braid, I dont remember the brand name. I put on a heavy snap swivel with a Palomar knot that I snap onto the spreader bar. Sometimes we use even 40 oz. Takes heavy rod/reel to crank up that much from 400 feet. I have a lighter rod/reel also, that I use in shallower water, 200 feet or less where you dont need so much lead. My buddy is a real tackle nut, he has 3 Halibut rods, I think they all have Shimano reels. I'm a little cheap. I've had the Senator for 25 years, I orig bought it at a garage sale.

Straight out from Pillar Point in 400' has produced for us on the tide change. If you aren't there on the change you won't be able to hold bottom.

Thanks to everyone that responded to my posting on Halibut fishing in Sekiu.
The first two days were slim as we worked most of the Sekiu area from Pillar Pt to Sekiu River. The afternoon winds and currents were also a real challenge.
On our last day we finally scored. Caught two (30# & 50#) off the Sekiu River @ 300' on a spreader and horse herring. A fair number of Halibut were caught by others, but many had no luck.
Really had a great week-end and enjoyed the Sekiu area. Thanks again the information.
