Has anyone used power pro on their downriggers? Heard it was getting popular so I bought some 200 lb to replace my ss wire. Tired of the freying, with the braid, you only use a palomor knot to connect your terminal tackle, beats the heck out of those little shunts. Anyway, let me know how you like it before I rig mine up.

I changed over last year but they told me to use 250 lb. so it wouldn't dig in like braid on your reel. So far I like it, no humming from the wire. Of course it didn't do Jack for my fish catching ability but it is easier to use.

I bought this at Sportco and the guy said that the power pro won't dig into the scotty downrigger spools but will crack the spool on the canons. He also said it wouldn't void the warranty on the scottys but I didn't get anything in writing so who knows. Guess I'll string it up this weekend and see how it does.

On a serious note, what does using braid do to the effectiveness of using a Black Box? Also will braided line ruin a Penn spool?

Braid kills the black box effect and also kills the natural voltage from an Aluminum boat. In other words, it could hurt your fishing which is why I skipped it. It depends on the natural voltage of your boat though. It could help! 
I think it comes down to tradeoffs as usual!  Alas, there is no perfect gear for every situation!

Get some Scotty downrigger line lanyards for handling braid....you risk being sliced otherwise. You should have them anyway if you use wire as they make downrigging easier.
Personally I'd stick with the wire just because it works ad using the humm and wire scope are part of the experience. Cannon rigger spools are weak...I've cracked 2 using wire and replacing them is a royal pain.

The sportco dude stated that some braid doesn't interfere with your black box but I wasn't listening since I don't have a black box. I basically want to try the braid because I have been getting a few kinks in my wire and if I didn't pack some terminal gear, Im stuck. I don't think it can hurt my catch ratio right now anyway. LOL

I have it on one rigger and wire on the other. I like it as the ball doesn't swing back as much,no humm and works great
for kok's.

I have heard that the braid at the bottom of the spool doesn't do well when used in the salt...it rots...make sure you flush your riggers well with fresh water & store in an area with good ventilation to allow for as much evaporation as possible.

braid should not interfere with your black box as most of tehm are manufactured from spectra and spectra can be VERy conductive.....

I use it on 2 of mine and it has its benifits and minuses. Pluss side is no hum and no need for black box. I found the black box to be more of a pain then help. If you got the right stuff on who needs it. Minus is it parts rather easily when you hit rocks which I have a tendency to do in Pyramid. Also it gave me the ability to go very deep in Tahoe(300+) which I could achive with SS but would have to respool anyway.

I would double check you Scotty manual, I seem to remember something in there saying not to use braid on them-compressing and cracking the spool!
