Complicated Regulations
      #379958 - 06/23/09 09:42 PM

Had an older couple on a beach today harvesting oysters and clams. Great except clam season has been closed since the end of May. I stopped to let them know and the guy says his reg's book says its open til the end of June. He had his copy so I asked him to show me....sure enough he was right. I asked him to close his to the cover page then slid my also closed book next to his for comparison. Moment of silence as I handed my copy to his wife and asked her to make sure he didn't lose it. Nice people and I helped them with some good info on where to get clams at an easy legal spot close by....pretty sure she still has that copy of this years reg's in her purse.

Good day overall....excellent 5 mile hike across some new mud flats plus 2 river crossings without waders and the state just added about 10 million new oysters to it's resources in Hood Canal.

Yep really haven't read all the this years regs yet, my aunt's husband calls and asks me to read the new anti snagging rule. The way I read it, it says that we basically have to replace all treble hooks with single points except for a few areas.

"Non-buoyant Lure restriction is now Anti-Snagging rule -
The non-buoyant lure restriction has been replaced by a new Anti-
Snagging rule. This rule requires anglers to use one single-point
hook unless fishing from a floating device (boat, float tube, etc.),
where 2 single-point hooks are allowed. Hooks must measure
¾” or less (point to shank) and must be attached to or below the
lure or bait. Weights may not be attached below or less than 12”
above the lure or bait. This new rule applies to all gear, whether
it floats or sinks, whether or not bait is used. In most areas, the
Anti-Snagging rule applies to all species with the exception being
the mainstem Columbia River, from Bonneville Dam to McNary
Dam, in where it applies only to anglers fishing for salmon and
steelhead. Check the Special Rules section for the water you wish
to fish for details."

What I don't understand is why we always have special rules and changes after the regulations come out. I can understand emergencies, but I think mostly we need a different printer that has a shorter lead time. That's just a guess.

Gotta wonder how many people are pulling plugs with trebles on the Sky right now. I ran into a couple guys on last week that had double hook drifting rigs (just like the bunch I had in my vest from last year...) and I had to tell 'em that those were no longer allowed. I had to show them the regs before they'd believe me.
Now if only they actually did something to go after the intentional snaggers.

What I don't understand is how WDFW will enforce the rule on the mainstem CR above Bonneville, when a pair of singles is all that's legal on a plug fished from a boat, but ODFW allows a pair of trebles?

Yeah I know you run singles and avoid the hassle, but seriously what is going through WDFW when they create a conflict like this?

You can pull plugs with trebles on the Sky...as long as you are fishing from a boat...and you can have a double hook rig while drift fishing...

John, right now between Lewis St. and the Wallace mouth, the Anti-Snagging rule is in effect, as of June 1...and you most emphatically can NOT have treble hooks on your plugs in that stretch right now...though unlike shorebound anglers, you can sidedrift with two single hooks.

Fish on...

Todd you hear about the new regulation proposal regarding lead db anchors and ropes? WDFW is considering requiring a deposit on them for cleanup.

#1 Source of changes and complications to the rules........Us. We piss and moan to no end about flossers....so WDFW responds. We piss and moan to no end about snaggers.... so WDFW responds. We piss and moan about bait thugs on our favorite wild steelhead river....so WDFW responds. We piss and moan to no end about wanting more opportunity for a special season on one river or lake....so WDFW responds. We piss and moan about boaters on a river....so WDFW responds.

#2 Source is ESA. Get use to it as it's gonna get way more complicated. Hence the prohibition on trebles in the CR by Washington while Oregon still allows them. People aka US are screaming aka pissing and moaning for more opportunity. Banning trebles by Washington sportfishers got Washington fishers a bit more opportunity due to a reduction in hooking mortality.

Don't like complicated? Quit pissing and moaning.

As long as the Salmon regs. don't effect fishing for Bass, Perch, Walleyes, Sturgeon or Shad. The snagging problem seems to be mostly connected with Salmon/Steelhead.

Yes and I think if Bigstick is allowed to post over there again, Gooose should be forced to as well, so I don't have to answer questions meant for him.

As soon as they start a "derelict anchore retrieval program", lemme know...I'll make a donation

Considering I've been rowing driftboats for over twenty years, and it's the only anchor I've lost*, I think I'm doin' all right.

Fish on...

Todd

*Did lose one on the Sauk once, but it just came upclipped in two feet of water...drifted up and picked it up the next morning after using a BFR and tow straps as a stand in...which does not work worth a crap. There's a reason why anchors are made of steel or lead

I just think it's funny that you have been catchin' it on at least 3 boards. No need to qualify how long you've been rowing, just take it and soon someone will do something even dumber and everyone will forget about your lead deposit.

Heck, I'm probably catching a little in places I've never even heard of, too...it's all good, notice that not very many rowers are chiming in, they've all got a few skeletons in their closets

I am +1 on anchors so far (knock on wood). I found one once while bank fishing.

I won't admit to losing anything while rowing because there's no evidence

But I've only been rowing since '95.

Look on the bright side, it's better to lose and anchor than a boat.
