Potholes Walleyes?
      #381082 - 07/09/09 11:06 AM

Anyone wanna share any info on walleye fishing on potholes? I am plannning a trip over there in mid august. I will be fishing for mostly crappie and bass but also plan on trying to get some walleye meat for fish n chips. Are they in deeper water in the summer? Any areas I should focus in on? Any hints and help would be appreciated.

Shaun.

never been there that late but did well at first light in front of the dunes and 30' or so untill it got too hot in front of the state park. Char worm spinner, did hit it one time with riggers and plugs but wasn't any better than a big nightcrawler.

Start at Frenchmans wastway and work roadrunners untill you find crappies into the dunes. Hint early am cast the swimming area in the state park for largemouth

Just got back from a great 5 days at potholes, very relaxing and just the break from work I needed. All in all we caught some nice size crappie, bluegill, a few decent cats. The bass were deep and hard to get any size but we managed a few 2 or 3 lb smallies, and a couple nice largemouth. And on the last night I got a 8lb walleye. Gonna try to make it back over there next month for a 3 day weekend.
Thanks for the tips WFFF, they helped narrow down the search.

Thanks Grimm.
Quill, There are channels in potholes. I caught 2 nice eating size channels and a few smaller(about 14") bullheads.
On the Mardon website, they showed a picture of someone a couple weeks ago who caught a 15lber of the dam. So there are decent ones in there.

We took the float tubes and hit the seep lakes this weekend. It was alot of fun. Lost a monster walleye. I was fishing a crappie jig and he hit, He was dragging me all around the lake. Finally got him to the surface right next to me and he got off. Caught alot of bass. Went back to Mardon to fish the dock and got about 15 perch with one pushinig 14" the rest around 10" to 12".
Awesome time and already thinking about heading back over.

Shaun.

Hey John. Next time you go over you have to fish. Its that good. Even if you just fish the dock, you can still catch ALOT of fish.

Got to Mardon late Friday night and was planning on fishing the dock but the store was closed so we couldnt get any worms or maggots. Fished about a half hour and tried to catch one of the massive carp that hang around the dock. Put a quarter of a hotdog on a 2/0 hook, Finally one bit but it came off after a few secounds.
Woke up Saturday morning and fished for about a half hour until the wind came up. It was so windy you couldnt even fish off the dock. We decided to go try and find a seep lake that was sheltered from the wind. Fished 1 seep lake for a couple hours, caught a few but nothing with any size worth keeping.
Sunday fished the lind coulee arm for crappie for a couple hours before heading home. Caught probally 30 fish. Kept 5 nice size crappie to eat.
The wind really threw a wrench in the weekend, but was still a awesome weekend away form the city. Gonna head back over in 2 weeks.

Shaun.

Shaun, you'll have to show me your crappie spots, that's about the only fish I eat with a passion.

Shaun - What did you catch the crappie on? Were they on the banks in the brush?

We got them all on crappie jigs tipped with worms.
We were fishing a bank that dropped form 2' to about 30' pretty fast. There was some kind of a brush pile about 15' down. Everytime I hit that brush I would get a fish.
Im heading back over there for a 4 day weekend oct.9th through the 12th.

Well it was a little slower this trip. The weather went from summer temps to low 20's real fast with a cold north wind that turned the fish off. But still caught some fish and had a great time.
Once the weather stays a little more stable, the fishing will pick up again. Might try for one more trip over before winter really hits.
