now im really, really ready
      #382099 - 07/22/09 04:49 PM

...to get my 1st rod done. I am armed with a copy of Rod Building Guide and a few supplies. I want to do a light 2pc trout spinning rod and then a koke rod on a 3 wt fly blank.

My biggest hang-up now is what size, type and quantity of guides to order. The book says about one guide per foot but thats a generalization. How tall the guides should be, what diameter and so forth is a bit confusing. I read a bit about the fuji new concept sizing and spacing but it just gave me more questions. What I need is a concrete "for this rod use these guide styles, sizes and quantities". I've got a good mental handle on everything but the guides. Nobody around here sells much rod building stuff so face to face, product to hand comparison isnt going to happen and I dont want to sit down with a bunch of stuff and find out I have to wait another week because I didnt get the right stuff.

Help

Rainshadow Batson has spacing charts on line and posted some
here. I use more Fuji guides as they are easy for me to get.
I have been using more Forcast guides but have to order them and that is hard for me to buy with out touching so I pick some up every time I pass through Squim.
Spacing, I need to know how long the rod is and line wieght.
I space guides to the rod so I get a even bend as sometimes
I will has a few guides in mid blank that are not even to the eye but makes the rod feel better.
I'm still working on one rod and hope to get back to but have been down with back problems and can't get it done.

Go to www.rodbuilding.org, open the library link and read the articles that interest you. The Fuji concept system have been improved a time or to from what you see on their site.
The easiest way to get the guides you need each time correctly on a spinning rod is to buy one of every guide in a model and brand you want to learn with than just laying out each rod with those guides. once you get the rod the way you want, just order the guides you used and put your layout kit away till the next time you need them.
This is an inexpensive way to go, as one mistake will cost far more once you look at the total cost of shipping etc.

Thats a beautiful thing Karry. I could fax something like that right to your uncle and have everything in a couple days, yeah? I need another Rainshadow sticker too. The old one got traded in with the old pickup.

Last night I installed a 2 pc. cork handle, a PacBay reel seat and butt cap onto my trout rod project. I reamed the cork with a round file and used carbon arbor things for the reel seat.

Today I went and saw my buddy Mark at The Traditional Sportsman and bought 2 different sized tapered reamers. I'm not willing to spend all that time with a round file getting cork to fit right...sheesh! Someone should've told me it would be a pain. So anyway, the handle, reel seat and winding check are all done and looking like they should. Tonight I'm going to file the guide feet and figger out where to put 'em. May even get a couple wrapped.

The blank is black..im thinking black and gold thread. Go Vandals!

Who do we hate? ....Boise State!

So anyway, I got the guide spacing where I wanted it by taping the guides to the blank, running the line through them with the reel on and putting a bend on it. Took awhile but I finally got it the way that I want it. Didnt get any filing or wrapping done and probably wont until after the weekend. My sons' band is playing at a community event tonight and this weekend will be full of fishing, weddings, birthdays, yardwork and, if there is time, a little sleep.

All of our guides come ground already so very little if any filing is necessary. We have reamers now that you chuck into a drill so no more blisters called the Dream Reamer. Batson has spent years trying to make rod building easier so you have a great experience on your first few rods.

Shoot me an email with your address and I will send out a new decal ASAP! What color is your new truck?

Had to take the weekend off from building my Vandal rod. MoJo and Sturgenators' visit made me tired. Then my table was covered with wedding invitations and miscellaneous girly junk for my daughters' wedding. I finally managed to get all the guides wrapped last night in black with gold trim. One of my trim bands is coming apart--got too close with the razor blade. So I'm gonna fix that, reglue the tip so its in line with the rest of the guides (drrr...), wrap the ferule and then hit all the wraps with color preserver.

Reaming the cork correctly with a round file and getting the guide spacing correct have been the most challenging and time consuming parts of the build so far. Keeping a guide where I want it as I begin wrapping it was a bit frustrating using thin strips of masking tape. Whats your preferred method? I have about 6 bags of little rubber bands that my kids accumulated while they had braces. I'm thinking those might work.

Those little rubber bands are the ticket for me,
I also have surgical tubing in different diameters
that I cut into little bands

1st coat of epoxy on the threads last night. I would be lying if I said it looks really good. Although it looks fine from a distance and will fish just fine. It isnt bad considering its my first attempt but its not something I would pay money for! It has been a fun learning experience and the next one will go a lot better.
