trail cam/scouting pics
      #382348 - 07/26/09 12:38 AM

Nothing too big but it's encouraging to see bucks. We did see one big buck on the first trip in to check the cameras. The cameras just got these smaller guys.

Bears too.

The bears have been busy. Interesting that they keep doing this in the same small area year after year. There's 3 or 4 of these from previous years almost within spitting distance.

They even climbed to get more.

I ran across this guy on my bike. He didn't spook and let me get pretty close before he went up the hill.

We're due to check the cameras again this week but with the heat they might soak a little longer.

Went EARLY to miss the heat and check the cameras and had technical difficulties. This was the first soak with the solar chargers and the batteries were dead with no pics.

What's your opinion on the solar? We just picked up a panel to try out on a spot that has good southern exposure. We've got cattle at pasture in several of our spots so it eats batteries pretty quick.

Nice pics. What brand of trailcam are you using? A bear got my cheap Bushnell last year (now he is hanging on my wall). I am looking for a new cam or two. Your pics are clear including the night shot. Just curious.

Walmart special, right cupo? I have had some bad luck with mine. I have the Wildview 2.

Walmart Moultree is correct. They've been good enough the last few years for cheapies. One of them had trouble reading the memory card, which required inserting the card a few times before it recognized it, but that was solved with a new clock battery. The flashes are too bright and bleach out the pics but that was solved with some tape over the flash. A little ghetto? Yes. If I was going to buy new trail cameras I'd spend a bit more for a different model. My dad is more into the cams than I am. From looking around online he says they don't do well with rechargable batteries, which is part of the deal with the solar chargers. Bears love 'em! In addition to the bear pic I posted we had ear and forehead shots of a bear, then the following pics were aimed all cockeyed. Each year the bears mess with them.

I was looking at cams online and I guess that's why there are bear safes! http://www.covertscoutingcamera.com/bearsafe.html

I wondered about that! I guess I should consider purchasing one/making a protector if I buy a cam.

Did some scouting/bear hunting yesterday and today. I had two does come into a call yesterday. I peeked over an edge expecting the crashing noises to be from a bear only to be eye to eye with two does.
Today I had a doe with a fawn come in at the first spot.

They came crashing over a ridge on a dead run after the first calling sequence, then searched all over for the source of the sound. They finally saw me when they were about 20 feet away.
Once they spooked I went back to calling. But they came back. You can hear momma huffing at me.
VIDEO1

I felt bad fooling them and stressing the doe. When I moved to another spot I saw a doe right away and watched her for about 15 minutes to make sure there was no fawn before I tried the call.
VIDEO2
After she spooked, she came right back...with a fawn. Sorry momma.

At the last spot today I saw a buck on the walk in. Something was odd though. He only had an antler on one side and it was a long thin spike with no velvet. When he finally spooked, he had a fawn with him. I think he was a she. They were too far to get pics.

Interesting, I was just about to ask on this board if anyone had ever taken a girl with a big rack and a black tail. I've heard about whitetail does with antlers, but never of blacktails.

Every once in awhile I'll hear of a he-she deer around here. It's not normal but it's not unheard of. I'm 95% sure that's what I saw today and it's the first time I've seen one.

I have been watching him for a while now, finally got him to step in front of one of the cameras. This guy just has a brush rack, but has a decent sized body.

Despite popular belief, rack aint everything. I personally am a meat hunter with the rack size coming in a very close second. I damn sure won't pass on something like that just cause there was a bigger one somewhere. Shoot it!

I cut timber for better part of 25years and we would see a couple each year. One job was on the other side of Government Medows had a nice 3point doe...Most of them you see are spikes or 2 points with weird form. Muleys and B tail never worked much in whitetail country so never seen one.
