Good bye old friend
      #382451 - 07/27/09 04:58 PM

After 13 years of faithfully doing more than it was designed for I finally kicked her to the curb:

So long old friend!

Hello new ride:

It will take awhile for the new one to endear itself to me. That old 1/2 ton pulled the 2 ton barge alot of miles. After that many years a rig kind of becomes part of a guy. It complained a little while being over worked the way an old horse does when its been ridden to far. It got dragged down more than one ramp and strained too much going up steep grades. It got abused, even neglegted at times but never let me down.

The new one has alot to prove but at least it was made for what it will be doing.

So did I Jeff, so did I. Saw it sitting forlornly at the car lot this morning. I think it flipped me off as I drove by!

Ya I know the feeling--my driftboat flips me off everytime I hook up the sled.

Not yet, takes a lot of money saving to buy a rig like that when you only make $10 a day picking cotton.

Not only is it going to flip you off everytime you drive by, it's going to leak oil in the driveway of the next owner out of spite.

Your new rig looks nice Ron

Well, I've pulled the barge twice with it now. I like that it doesnt squat when I crank up the landing gear. I also like that all the trailer lights work. (The pigtail socket for the left turn signal hasnt worked on old faithful for about 4 years. shhhh....) I also like the locking rear diff. I used to have to put the 1/2 ton in 4x4 to pull the ramp at grain growers but I never even spun on the wet ramp with the new one in 2H. And finally...I really, really like being able to pull the hill up Bryden Canyon going the speed limit at 1/2 throttle. I couldve gone 60 if I wanted and actually had to keep an eye on the speedometer. Old faithful would barely do the speed limit...in 3rd...pedal to the metal and sounding like a Sherman.

After a week and a couple of trips to the river I'm starting to accept the change.

I can't wait to get my old faithful put down. It's killing me in gas. I get between 6 and 8 mpg pulling the boat and that's not good. Nice job on the pickup. Looks good!

You gonna get a diesel. I know a guide who claims to get 18 or better towing his sled.

You get more MPG with diesel. But you also pay more per gallon. I thought about diesel but I bobtail more than I tow so I couldnt make the extra maintainence and fuel cost numbers work out. The 6 liter vortec is a reasonable compromise I think.
