Ground Squirrels
      #382536 - 07/28/09 04:05 PM

We spent last weekend up at Red River here in Idaho and what a blast! Lots of trout around and pretty willing to take a fly. We also found some Squealin Pigs (Ground Squirrels). The first day we went out it was really hot and there were a few out but not as many as we had hoped. But we still found a few and did manage to get a few shots off at them. The next day was alot cooler and so we headed back out to the killing fields! With the temp a few degrees cooler the pigs were out in full force! We parked the truck and Jim, JD, and I headed out on a little walk down a dirt road that we had seen a few of the pigs the day before on. Jim had brought his bow along for a little pratice and so we let him go first on the short shots

most of the time they were standing just like this one but they were still hard to hit with the bow. My Savage 17 HMR was a bit better at getting the job done.

Jim did manage to get some with the bow including this double

We took some long range shots as well I managed to hit one at 89 yards and not to be out done Jim hit one at 60 yards with his Bow! It was amazing to say the least! But the best shot of the day was made by JD he is 7 years old and one hell of a shot! He blasted one at 87 yards all on his own! He got down on one knee and got a bead on the little bugger and pulled the trigger and wack squirrel down! You can tell by the look on his face that he was excited!

Here are a few of the other pics we got

One of Mine

The kid is a crack shot!!!!!!!

Gooose he said it was going to be a double lung shot he was shooting better groups with my 17 than his dad and I at 100 yards. The groups were about the size of a quater!

Benefits of youth Doug. Try treachery such as exclaiming loudly a half sec before he squeezes one off that there's a 5 x5 Muley buck in the bushes off to the side. Welcome to old age and treachery.

I've been shooting some of these damn things too, but I didn't think to take pictures of it and post them.

I was afraid Sunshine would pay me a visit.

Most of them taste like chicken deep fried in bacon grease. Mainly just a nuisance they dig holes and become a threat to cattle and other live stock and so the ranchers want them gone!

I kill them because they keep chewing through bird block in the eaves of the shop and wellhouse and tear [**whoops**] up to make their stupid nests.

Besides that, they keep teasing Millie and won't fight fair by staying up high where she can't get them.

I'm only using a pellet rifle though, since they tend to hang onto the side of the shop when Millie traps them there and I don't want to shoot big holes in it.

It's kind of cool, because when she gets them there, she has a specific "I got em Mom, come shoot them" bark. She gets really mad at me if I don't arrive promptly. She scrunches her eyebrows up and gives me the "look" just like Caveman does!

Maybe I need to get out more.

Do they have to be ground, or can you just cut 'em up and cookem like that?

Here I thought all this time I was the only that ever went after those things with my bow. Been a few years and I was shootin a lot smaller whistle pigs though. Nice handy work for sure. If you are hittin those then there should be no problems when the season starts. Good job.
